psa about wisdom teeth removal

So I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth out yesterday and the people at Conestoga Oral Surgery on Good Drive in Lancaster are wonderful. Particularly Dr. Eckhart who was very generous with the valium and I don't remember a thing after "you're going to feel a little warm in your IV".  (I was very surprised that the surgeon placed my IV too, the surgeons I work with would NEVER consider this their job for any reason.) Yay for not remembering anything! I was truly terrified at the thought of hearing things break off inside my head...

The bad news is, I put it off toooooo long and a piece of my root broke off when he tried to remove the one tooth. Of course he tried to dig it out and now that side HURTS!!! The other 3 really don't feel that bad. Anyway, I suggest you don't wait until the age of 28 to get it done because I don't think this would have happened a few years ago.

That's my psa for the day. Now I'm off to take some vicodin, ice my face, and read my book...

Re: psa about wisdom teeth removal

  • I got mine out at 19 (I think I was 19). Anyway, I was very lucky and only had ONE.

I hope you start feeling better soon! Get some rest and just remember that its over with now and you won't have to do it again.

Oh, and what are you reading? :D

  • I'm glad the surgery went well.  I had mine taken out (all 4) last year at the age of 26 and I too, went to Conestoga Oral (but at their other location on Fruitville Pike?) and I had Dr Yuengling...he was FANTASTIC! Seriously, he made me feel at ease because I was terrified and of course when I woke up I was in a completely different room and didn't know how I got there, I started to cry, haha! But they kept saying 'the surgery went quicker than trying to wake you up!' Um, thats not something I want to hear! lol But my recovery went super quick and without much pain, thanks to vicodin.

  • I hope you feel better Chipmunk Cheeks!  (I'm guessing you're swollen).  Treat yourself to some of those frozen ice treats while you recover.

DH was 28 when he had his done too... I agree with your PSA to not wait.  Not that wisdom teeth surgery is ever fun, but he had additional complications from waiting too long as well.

My wisdom tooth story is that I was reading the early Harry Potter books during my recovery.  I drifted in-and-out of sleep, and drempt of all the food they ate during the big feasts at school.  I was so hungry because my mouth was too sore to eat much of anything for days (and TMI, I also had nausea problems after the surgery).

  • I'm glad you are doing well.  It's amazing the different experiences people can have.  I hope you feel better soon!

My oral surgeon also placed my IV and I was so impressed.  My surgery itself went well, but a day after the surgery I started throwing up and then felt miserable.  Since mine were all impacted and I waited until I was older, I had a ton of swelling and was a mess.  Despite my constant rinsing with salt water I got dry socket and was still so swollen that I didn't eat solids for about 4 weeks.  My brother on the other hand was completely fine the next day.  I agree, if you can get them out earlier, it seems people have less problems.

A student that works with me had hers out last week and has sadly now been in the hospital all week (complications like mine starting with throwing up but not until 36 hours later).  I hope she will be all right!

I've been under anestesia three times and cried after waking up every time.  Apparently, it's not an uncommon reaction.

The nurses were really nice and kept assuring me that crying is a normal reaction, but anyone that knows me, knows I'm an emotional person. I cry over the spca commericals!

As a nurse I've seen many people cry when coming out of anesthesia. Some people say they're fine and just keep crying. Very interesting.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone! I'm reading Duma Key and will most likely finish it's 790 pages tonight. haha. There are some benefits to not leaving the house...

  • Both Dh and I got our wisdom teeth out there. Mine were done in  the 90's... I think I was in my early 20s and didn't have problems other than more or less "losing a day", due to the anesthesia and that my mom and the assistant had to pretty much carry me to the car. That and the next day were pretty much blank to me.I had Dr.Chairsell   http://www.conestogaoms.com/oral_surgeon_lancaster/dr_j_frederick_chairsell.html      who is now retired.

Dh got his done a couple of years ago, in his late 20s. His were done because his teeth were starting to become impacted. He had Dr. Henrichsen   http://www.conestogaoms.com/oral_surgeon_lancaster/dr_daniel_p_henrichsen.html

Neither of us had any problems that I can remember. We both were pretty good to go afterwards, little to no swelling and little to no pain.
