Husband's company merged with another office and has been having trouble this year adjusting and combining office policies. The new office planned the Christmas party this year, and rather than dinner and open bar (as Mr Riz's company has done in the past) the new company decided to spend the money on "heavy apps and a DJ." Without an open bar.
So tonight I will be attending a holiday party with a bunch of middle-aged engineers who are expected to dance to a DJ without imbibing first.
Anyone else have a weird holiday party approaching?

Sounds like the hubs' party last year... miserable time - they bought the first drink for everybody. The band was awful, the food wasnt good and about 3 desperate divorcees danced the entire time. It was not good. We left about an hour after the dinner portion. I'm not sad that due to budget cuts there will be no company party this year.
My company always has a lunch instead of a party. It sucks as well but at least its a free meal during work hours and not a Saturday night I have to give up.

Considering they're discussing people pay upfront for their meal now (committee members across the hall from me), I do not think I will be attending...
And, the thought of engineers attempting to dance with no booze is hilariously entertaining, but I'm sorry you have to go! Flask?

I wonder at what point holiday parties stopped being rewards for employees and became chores for all involved?
DH's party was awesome last year. There were 10 $100 gift cards to various merchants that were wrapped and handed out as door prizes. The employees' names were drawn and they got to choose between the packages that only had hints to the inside. There was "honey do list" (Lowes gift card), "outdoor time" (REI card), and others that included restaurants and a spa.

Not at all. I love holiday parties, especially the swanky ones that I imagine everyone else is going to, but working for a school I never got to go to one. When I worked at the school we had a yearly luncheon for the agency. We were told that was so they didn't have to pay for dinner or for us to bring dates. Nice. DH works for Disney so there's an office party that they can't bring guests to (on the lot) and a family party at Disneyland. I sort of hate Disneyland but you get a free ornament so we go every year. That's probably flameworthy in itself.

I don't have a full time job that hosts holiday parties. Both schools I teach at host them for the full time faculty/staff, but adjuncts tend to get left out.
DH's company usually does the big swanky Christmas party (at a museum, a club, etc.) with food, booze, music....but it was cancelled this year. No fun.
I work for a very large company that has satellite offices all around the US. The main division in NH does a big holiday party that you have to pay to go to...I don't go as no one in my office goes, I don't really feel like paying an arm and a leg, and I wouldn't know anyone there. My office does a get together but this year decided to just go out to eat. I'm not really buddy buddy with anyone I work with (they're all older woman who b*tch and moan about everything - I call them hens) so I'm probably not going to go. I just need a really good excuse to get out of it!
DH works for a new company that's very small. He told me his boss takes everyone out sig others included. I haven't met anyone yet and he's still learning the ropes so we're both looking forward to it.
