What Do I Need For My First Christmas?

This is my first Christmas with my fianc? without relatives wanting us to join them on family vacations.  We have money saved up for this, but my mind got all boggled when my fianc? asked what do we need?  For right now we are currently living in an apartment and the one thing we agree on is a fake tree.  Other than that I do not know what to get.  We agreed on do this ornament thing that I thought was really precious.  Every year we each get one ornament together, so that way each ornament means something.  I thought that was adorable, plus coming from someone who does not like to decorate, I had to say yes. "Laugh" Big Smile Other than that what else do I need to get?  Please someone help?

Re: What Do I Need For My First Christmas?

  • I don't think you NEED too many decorations your first year, but that's just me. I think if you see something you really love, get it. If not, wait til the day after Christmas and take advantage of sales. Other than a tree, some things we purchased were a wreath, stockings, stocking holders, a few decorations like a nativity scene, a tree skirt, etc. I don't think you'll need many outside lights or outside wreaths for an apartment.
  • I'm not a huge fan of over-decorating for holidays (plus, living in a townhouse we don't have a ton of room to store things in the off-season!). ?We have a Christmas tree, a holiday wreath on our front door, a festive centerpiece on our dining room table, and a platter for DH's favorite Christmas cookies. ?If you already have a tree, I don't think you "need" anything else.
  • You don't need anything. It really depends on what you want to do, and how all-out you want to go.

We're going more and more minimal for the holidays. A few pointsettias, some candles and lights, and stockings. That's about it.

  • We are renting  a townhouse so we like to decorate it up a little.  All you really need are some lights to put up around the apartment (and possibly the outside a bit), stockings if you want them, you can even get those 3M hooks that you can easily take down after you are done using them.  We planned on not buying a lot and we went to Giant one day and they had these two Santa things I had to have because they were too cute to pass up.  I guess you really just need to step back, look at your apartment and figure out how much stuff you can A)stand to look at and B) not be bothered to take the time to take it all down.

  • Our first Christmas we got a tree, ornaments, a wreath, stockings, stocking holder, and lights.  For us, it doesn't matter if we're in an apartment or not.  Part of getting into the holiday feel is making whereever we are feel like a home, not a temporary living situation.
