need a new bike...any recs?

DH and I want to get ourselves bicycles for christmas to help us be more active.  We are NOT serious cyclers, but we do want to get bikes that would be good for riding around a neighborhood and maybe a park with bike paths. Can anyone recommend a bike to get or ones to stay away from?  We were thinking of getting some from walmart or another inexpensive place but not sure if we should get the cruisers, mountain bike, etc.  Should we go to an actual bike shop or are the ones at Dicks sporting goods or walmart good enough? Thanks!

Re: need a new bike...any recs?

  • I would advise not getting one through Wal-Mart of ***'s Sporting Goods.

Your best bet would be to head out to a bike shop. Getting a bike is like trying on a new pair of shoes. They don't work for everybody. You need a bike that will fit you right so you are comfortable riding.

Many people give up biking because they don't have the proper bike. Explain to the bike technician what you and your DH are interested in doing. Where are your rides mainly going to take place. What type of pavement, etc? This can have an effect on the tires/frame that you should get. Do your research online as well.

Keep in mind that there are a ton of other accessories you will need for your bikes even if you are a leisure rider. You will both need helmets, water bottles, and at the very least a tire replacement kit. There is nothing worse than going out for a ride- get 15 miles away from your starting point and get a flat tire. Ugh!

My story. I bought my first bike right out of college from ***'s Sporting Good. It was a mountain bike and I wasn't really experienced in the cycling world. The chains were awful, impossible to shift grears, etc. That bike wound up sitting in my garage for the longest time because it was just a pain to ride.

Now, I am in the market for my new road bike. I'm training for a triathlon at the moment. I am borrowing my aunt's road bike since we have the same build. I really like her bike. I have talked with bike techs for about two months now. I have my eye on a Trek bike, and hoping that it is either under the tree or for my birthday in April. I have been able to test drive the bike at the shop and I am in love.

  • Agreed on the bike. You need to find one that fits your body. I would recommend going to a bike shop (Reser in Newport is nice as well as Campus cyc. in Clifton). I am not a huge rider, but dh is. He has road bikes as well as a commuter bike. You really need to find one that fits you. The Trek bikes are my favorite, but I know others that dont prefer it. I would recommend going to these places, talking to them about your preferences and go from there.
