My mom, sister, and I are coming in two weeks to Dallas to look for a house for me and my DH (to rent). We do not have children, so school district isn't an issue. We want to live in a family-oriented area, though. We are homebodies, so we want to live in a very safe place.
Also, my DH is going to be a police officer, so I will likely be home alone a lot. This worries me, so safety in an area is key.
I've heard some ladies say Grand Prairie is good, some say not so much. What do you think? It's close to the police academy, hence us looking there. We are also looking at Arlington.
The majority of the houses we LOVE are in Ft. Worth, but I've heard that's a horrible, horrible idea to commute. For example, if we live in S. Ft. Worth and Mapquest says it's a 40 minute commute, what would you say the average commute would be during rush hour?
Also, I just sold my car, so I can buy something more reliable. I will be buying a car (used) in Dallas. Where do you recommend me going? I want a Toyota or Honda, most likely.
Sorry so many questions. I'm going into this move blind, as is my DH. We don't know a soul in Dallas, so I need lots and lots of advice from nesties! I'd also like to make friends IRL with some of ya'll, too! ![]()
Re: Coming to visit in 2 weeks... need advice
We live in the Lakewood/M Street area of Dallas and just love it. It's older houses with young couples/families. We're close to downtown and major highways, but it still feels like a nice little neighborhood. I know there are several houses to rent, but it might require you driving around. You can alost look on our local MLS via any realtors website. We prefer www.briggsfreeman.com Are you set on having a house? There are also LOTS of condos and apartments available in good areas. DH commutes from our home to GP/Arlington daily and it isn't too bad. I am a HUGE safety freak and other areas I would live in are: the L streets (Lake Highlands), Las Colinas/Coppell, Southlake or the Park Cities (this area, however, is very expensive). Allen, which is a northern suburb of Dallas was recently rated as one of the safest cities in Texas, but the commute would be awful.
As far as cars, I would suggest looking on Cars.com and using a Dallas zip code. We purchased our Toyota from Toyota of Plano, but it was because they had exactly what we were looking for. Good luck with everything. I can imagine it being overwhelming, so let me know if you have any more questions.
South Dallas is really not the best area if safety is really important to you. There are some nice pocket neighborhoods in North Oak cliff but I'm pretty sure it's not what you're looking for. Since you're renting I would recommend renting an apartment or condo in a more desirable area that would still be within a reasonable commute for your DH. I pm'ed you some addresses.
