Toddler Toys

Hey,

I'm having the hardest time coming up with a gift for my 18 month old nephew.  I've walked up and down the toys r us aisle and I'm just not being inspired.  I realize that he won't remember I gave it to him, and this won't be some life-changing gift, but I like my gifts to be special, ya  know? I know a lot of you have kids, so I'm hoping one of you has the magic answer.

Three things you should know:

1)  He's a mover.  Early crawler, early walker, early runner.  The kid's not happy unless he's moving.

2) Whatever gift I get needs to fit in a van with a family of five, their luggage, and the christmas presents they acquire, for an 8 hour drive.

3) Under $30?  Hopefully?

Thoughts?

Re: Toddler Toys

  • What about something from leapfrog? Does he have something already that he can ride? Playskool has a toy that he can either ride it or push it. You could also go with cars/trucks that he can push as he crawls around.

  • i always try to get things that they can grow into, how about making a felt board? You can get little felt people on etsy or school stores online. Kids can make up their own stories and stick them on the felt board or the parents can buy the felt characters for their favorite books and use them while telling stories. It's a pretty cheap gift but can bring lots of learning and imagination!

  • I like the felt board idea, but maybe next year.  I think he would probably chew on the felt people at this point.

Leapfrog - I'm trying to remember... I'm not sure he has the attention span for a leapfrog yet, if it's like the one I got my nieces a few years back.  I do like the leapfrong line and would like to get something educational, but I think I have to wait a year for that, too.

  • Kids love puppets also, for my cousins 1st birthday I got her a pigeon puppet and the book "Dont let the pigeon drive the bus" Its a huge hit in the elementary schools. Well they had a signed copy by the author at toys r us so I got the book and the puppet. My aunt says its her favorite book and she loves when the pigeon reads it to her! She always picks it out of her big bin of books to read!

  • What about a little people set?

You can get him one with wheels, like the plane or bus, and he can crawl around on the floor with it.

  • When I worked in a toddler room at a daycare, the most used toys were books, trucks (the ones that made noise of course), Playdoh, there was a leapfrog (I believe it was that brand) caterpillar that had the letters on it's legs and it did fun things and sang the alphabet...they loved that one so much we had to take the batteries out! But it's cool because it has a cord so they can walk it around the room with them

  • Kinda against the grain here but my favorite gift to give is Graeme Base's book Animalia.  Bright, colorful, help them learn letters and such and the art work in there is amazing.  I bought it for a friend's baby shower and Hubby was totally engrossed in it (and got mad when I took his picture!).
  • ooh! JKip, my niece and nephews had something like that.

Found this on Amazon:  http://www.amazon.com/LeapFrog-19106-Alphabet-Pal/dp/B001H0SOT6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1260204359&sr=8-3, definitely the your price range.

  • Lincoln is really digging puzzles lately, the bug chunky ones with easy to place shapes. He also really likes those big chunky plastic lego-like blocks. He got a bunch last year for christmas and is just starting to really enjoy them now. I got a bag of 100 for $10 at Target on black friday.
  • juangela! Yep thats the one! They love it!
