  • There's a new guideline? I just always remember it as Affect = Action.
  • There's a new guideline? I just always remember it as Affect = Action. So Affect is a verb.

Haha, no.  Well, yes, but no.  There is no new guideline in reference to this rule, but there is a new (completely unrelated) guideline I'm discussing at work.  So, what's written in my post is part of a sentence I'm writing.

So - "The new guidelines affect X, Y, and Z" would be correct, right?

    I believe so.

The guidlines will affect x,y and z. .

The guidelines will have the following effect on x,y, and z.

You're correct!  (or we're both wrong) Haha  But seriously, I'm 99% certain Gerrie's examples are correct.  Affect is typically used a verb and effect is typically used as a noun.  X affects Y.  X had an effect on Y.

  • Whenever I get confused about this, I totally think of you Andrea.  Smile

    I still don't get it.  I can't lie.

I like to think I'm pretty smart, but I've come to accept that this is one rule I will never, ever get!

    I have to ask ever.single.time.

Though I'm hoping my new handy reference document (thanks to Gerrie and Marsh!) will help.
