Sleep Apnea

Does anyone have it? Or is married to someone who has it?

Just a little curious about my DH. He has recently started snoring about 50% of the time...he NEVER snored before. I think it's because he has gained baby weight right along with me : ) and everything I have read about snoring solutions says that weight is the major player. (I can't sleep through his snoring...I sleep very lightly and I am just not used to it at all)

He is also a nose breather...and sometimes has allergies or whatever so his head is a little stuffed. Well this causes him to try breathing out of his nose, but can't so he gasps for breath out of his mouth. This isn't all the time...but it's still enough to make me wonder is this is sleep apnea.

We just put a humidifier in the bedroom to try to help keep him breathing better. I have started to call him Walter (after Meg Ryan's bf in Sleepless in Seattle...haha!!) He's not a fan. But the poor guy had to sleep on the couch the other night because he just wouldn't stop and I couldn't sleep at all!!

Could he have apnea issues?...or does it just sound like chubby guy snoring issues?

Re: Sleep Apnea

  • We just had a discussion at thanksgiving about sleep apnea.  One of my cousin's in laws has it.  He was making noises when he ate dinner and it was really bizarre.  I think it was because of breathing problems because he is really overweight but everyone kept saying it was sleep apnea.  Thing is, when he was eating dinner he wasn't sleeping so I was confused by it.  I do know that the breathing problem stems from his weight so it may be a factor.  He could go get checked out by a specialist if it becomes a problem.
  • I may make him go see someone about it...but we're both plan on getting healthy after baby#2 arrives so I'm hoping the issue sort of resolves itself. He's only gained maybe 30lbs...but I think it put him over the snoring weight limit or something.

But man, if I was having issues breathing in daily life...I would hope someone yelled at me to lose weight!!!  Although - don't talk to me after climbing two flights of stairs!! : )

  • My DH had sleep apnea.  He would completely stop breathing during his sleep then he would take a slightly larger than normal breath (but it wasn't a huge inhale or anything) and resume breathing as normal.  Then a minute or so later he'd stop breathing again and it would repeat.  He isn't overweight at all, so it definitely wasn't a weight issue for him.  His doctor said it was actually related to his tonsils (enlarged) and after he had a tonsillectomy, the apnea was gone.
  • My Dad has it. He's overweight now, but I think he has had it his whole life and never knew until he got tested for it. They have you do a sleep study and analyze it. He would stop breathing TONS during his sleep so he was never really getting rest. He told me once after he was diagnosed that he never really felt rested-he was tired all of the time no matter how much sleep he got. He also said he would never dream! Once the got the machine that you wear to help you sleep, he started dreaming.
  • I have no experience but LOL @ calling him Walter...

  • I can always tell when MH has gained a few pounds because he will start snoring.  It's so weird that just a few pounds make him snore so freaking loudly!  Whenever he starts snoring I tell him to get his arse to the gym.
  • Snoring doesn't always mean sleep apnea.  Does he have other symptoms as well, like being tired all the time like battybtags mentioned above?  Sleep apnea is when the person actually stops breathing repeatedly during their sleep - not just snoring or being overweight.

You can be tested for it, if you're really concerned, but it never hurts to lose a little weight if that might be what's contributing to the snoring.

  • I believe my DH has it, but he will not go to the Dr.  I hear it can be very dangerous so I wish he would go.  I think he's afraid he'll have to wear the mask to bed.  Anyways, he snores sometimes but he also stops breathing.  There have been times I have counted how many seconds he doesn't breathe.  And he'll make these gasping noises as well.  I'm hoping he'll go to the Dr.
