Anyone here have an asthmatic DC?

My DS has had a persistant cough at night for well over a month.  He also had a constant cough last winter.  Since my DH has really bad asthma, they are going to monitor DS for it.  They are starting him on a puffer as well, because he coughs all night long/all nap long, and he never gets a good sleep.

Anyone have any tricks for prevention?  We will be seeing a specialist in the spring, they think he is too young for one right now, and they can't diagnose till about 3 yrs old.

Re: Anyone here have an asthmatic DC?

  • Hey :) I'm horrible- never on here but this caught my eye!

Lucy my 3.5 year old has brutal excema, we're seeing a specialist in February. I have asthma, and she had a spontaneous asthma attack last November, after which whenever she'd be running around, she'd need her puffer. She needed it alot, girl likes to run around. This past summer I took her off dairy to see if it would help her excema- nope, took her wheeze away instead :)

I'd always heard that, and it might just be a coinkydink,  but she's only had her puffer maybe 10 times since summer instead of 10x/week, and probably only because what I thought was her wheezing was just her being chesty.

So it's worth a shot- I can't go a day without my inhaler, not even 6 hours, and I don't want her needing it as an adult that bad, so I'm doing whatever I can to prevent it.

  • I don't have any children, but do have severe asthma myself. Have you ever had your DC tested for allergies to dustmites? My youngest sister would get the same symptoms you're describing when she was younger. It really helped to rip out all carpeting in her bedroom, cover her mattress and pillow with a cover (make sure it is recognized by the asthma assoc), take out all fabric draperies, and make sure there aren't a ton of toys in the bedroom.

Some medications can have breakthrough coughing as well. Check with your pharmacist to make sure this isn't the case.
