Craigslist - sketchy right?

On Saturday I put a bunch of items up for sale on craiglist.  This morning I received an email from someone interested in a desk I'm selling.  He asked if it was still available and if it was in good condition.  I responded that it was and if he wanted to see it we would make an appointment.  He just replied with the following message which I'm finding really sketchy.  As of right now he knows my name and email and I think I'd like to leave it at that.

Hi. Saw your advert on craigslist and would want to make an immediate purchase . I will like  you to withdraw the advert from craigslist i dont mind adding an extra $20 for you to take  the advert down from craigslist so that i can be rest assured that am in hand of the item.I dont have time to come take a look. I  will be paying via  cashier's check, and it will be over night payment .You don't need to bother your self with the shippment ok,i will take care of that.So i will need you to provide me with the following information to facilitate the mailing of the check.
1.Your full name
2.Your mailing address be it residential or postal address
3.Your phone number.
i will have my mover come over as soon as you have  the check

Re: Craigslist - sketchy right?

  • Okay I googled the name on the email and it came up on blog about craigslist spammers.  Definitely deleting his email and won't be replying.

  • I think you can report the spammer to Craigslist too.

I've gotten the other scams before and they were super obvious.  This one had me do a double take because the person actually emailed twice.  And the first email wasn't at all sketchy.

  • This happened to me at my last job when we were selling some old office stuff. We actually got a check, the first email seemed legit and by the second one I told him to stop communications because I could tell it was a fraud. That same day a check for $1500 showed up from a lawyers office in TX.

I called the Lawyers office and they confirmed the fraud and that fake checks with their info were being sent to people all over the country. I felt horrible for them.

  • That is sketchy.  I like selling stuff on there because we've gotten rid of some crap for $, but it is a pain to weed through the spam sometimes.  Be careful!
  • I had my house listed on Craigs list and had the same problem.  The guy kept emailing me that he was going to buy my house, asking price, sight unseen.  It was totally a scam and once I even got an email in another language from this guy.  It was totally creepy!
  • Anyone on CL who doesn't want to pay cash is a scammer, IMO, unless you're selling your house, in which case the buyer should come with legit bank funding.
