Think a co-worker just stole my idea

In several meetings I've thrown out an idea that would save us a bunch of money on a project.  The project doesn't fall under my department but it does overlap with ours.  Well the co-worker who is charge of the project just stood outside my door and presented the idea to the CEO as if it was his own.  The CEO loved the idea and is thrilled about the money it will save.  Wth?  I'm 99% sure this coworker has been in the meetings when I've suggested the same thing.  And I didn't hear him say to the CEO "this came up at the staff meeting" or "someone suggested"...no, it was "what do you think of this?" Argh!

Re: Think a co-worker just stole my idea

  • That sucks. I think a little "I'm so glad we're going to do *this...I've been mentioning it for quite a while!" is in order!!! : )
  • That is so rude when people do that!  If I give an idea that isn't mine I always give credit where credit is due.  I've had people do that to me and it's very hurtful.  Sorry that happened to you.
  • That is so frustrating and TOTALLY wrong! I agree with PP--call him on it!

  • I agree with Telyco - I would say that.  I have had this happen to me in the past and have said pretty much what Telyco said.  Give credit where credit is due.
  • I would call a meeting with details- before the coworker can "work anything out" and say- I've been working on this idea and I'm so glad we're all ready to get on board with it- and thank you (insert co workers name) for moving this along so quickly...

    go get 'em J!!

  • That blows.  I have that happen to me with my workplace often and it still gets under my skin...

  • It's definitely flattering that he liked your idea that much to pass it on...but like PP said, don't let him get away with stealing your idea!

I love this idea and would totally do it. It's not fair when when someone steals the credit for your hard work.
