Craft Project Fail

So DH and I have a tradition to exchange on gift with each other on Christmas Eve and it's an ornament. Well, this year I wanted to get him a coffee ornament. So I started looking online and found instructions for a nice self made one.

Well, I tried it. Last weekend I went shopping with a friend and picked up all the supplies. Then last night I started the project (http://www.save-on-crafts.com/cofbeanchris.html).

So I painted the ball while DH was out, no problem. Well, DH came home, so I had him stay in the computer room while I glued on the coffee beans. It took me 3 hours! At first it was easy, but as I went down pieces started sliding and moving and the OCD in me was really coming out. So I tried to do small chucks and let it dry and that didn't work either. So I decided to just move as quick as possible bc once the ball was full, they'd have no space to slide. Finally I finished and took it upstairs to hide and let dry. Well, 10 minutes later I went to check on it and 1/2 the beans had fallen off. So I just scopped them up and threw them on whichever way and held it together. I set it down so all the fallen pieces we're stable and let it go.

So this morning I get up and the pieces are all dried on. The ornament doesn't look too bad. So the next step is to spray on the sealer. Well, I didnt want to take the ornament downstaris, so I figured I would spray it in our bathroom. I considered opening a windo and decided against it. FAILURE!!! I spray it on and it looks nice. I go set it down, go into the bedroom, go back into our bathroom and almost pass out. So I go to open the window and it doesn't open..... So I went and opened our closet windows to let it air out. I thought I would use a small enough amount it wouldn't fume up the whole place. Sigh.

So I was late for work and of course DH smelled the fumes too. He now thinks I'm making him a model (so at least he doesn't know what I'm doing =D). All I have left is gluing on the bow, so I should be good now. I just hope he likes it with all the damn work it took to make.

  • I think it's cute that you two do ornaments!  That's really neat!  Sorry it didn't work too well spraying and with the odors, but I'm sure he appreciates your work!
  • Such a great idea, though.  I remember my grandmother had these great handmade ornaments with beads on pins and this reminds me of those.  (Maybe I'll make those this year.  hmmm)

This totally reminds me of designstar.  This one chick was gluing plastic cups to the wall and the design looked really modern, but all the cups started cascading off the wall in clumps and she ended up with a mess and no design.  Sad
