I just sold some of my textbooks online, through my school's classifieds website. I am selling them to someone in another city. We agreed on a price, and she just sent me an email saying that she'll send the money electronically. Apparently I'll get an email, and in it there will be a list of banks, I click on mine and sign in, and then it'll transfer the money.
I've never done this before and I want to make sure this is legit before I sign into one of those phishing websites. Can you really send money this way?
I know for sure she's a student at my school, so that eliminates some of the chances of her being a random scam artist, but enrollment at my school is no guarantee she's legit, either, right?
Re: How do email money transfers work?
yes, you can send money this way. I have never done it with a stranger though, only to myself (because I bank at BMO and at TD).
I just sent one to myself, to see if there was anything special about the emails that can help you identify if it is a real email. I'll let you know once I get the email.
I might wait a day or 2 before actually sending the books, just to confirm it was legit.
I used to use these all the time when I was in grad school. My folks would send me money this way and the girl I subletted to sent me her rent this way.
It's quite legit. I would put them in the mail after I finnished executing the e-mail though as the PP said. No need to wait a few days though. As soon as you follow the steps on your e-mail you'll have the money in your account.
I do it all the time. It is a really easy and safe way to send money. They have no access to any of your banking information.
When you click on your bank it takes you to your banks online banking page. So it isn't some random website it is your banks actual website and you are in the secure area of that website.
The email came from the actual name of the sender, in my case "Pamela Lastname"
The email was worded as follows:
MY NAME,
PAMELA LASTNAME has sent you an INTERAC Email Money Transfer.
Amount: $DOLLAR AMOUNT(CAD)
Sender's Message: A message was not provided
Expiry Date: 07 Jan 2010

I've received payment this way before and it worked just fine.
My only complaint was that it wouldn't deposity into my PCF account, I had to route it through my TD account. Not a huge deal as I bank with more than one place, but it was irritating that it wasn't accepted at PCF.
