Laminate flooring suggestions

We had plans on totally remodeling our kitchen but after talking with DH we decided that since this isn't our "forever" home we'll just redo the stuff that will make it a little more appealing to us- flooring and countertops.  Any suggestions for a relatively inexpensive laminate flooring?  We've found anything from $1.99 sq. foot up to $6 or $7 per sq. foot.  I'm not sure where to go- a discount place, a larger store, or somewhere local.  Any suggestions in the Buffalo area?

Re: Laminate flooring suggestions

  • We bought ours from Home Depot when they were having a sale.  It ended up being less than $2 a sq. ft.
  • I can only suggest to NOT go to Lumber Liquidators. My parents are suing them right now. They were sold some shiitty laminate and LL refuses to do anything about it. They sent their own inspector - who told my parents that the product was crap...and that he'll write it up that way...but that they will make him change it. And they did...the report now says it was installation error. I researched them after the fact - and it turns out MANY people have had this same issue with both the flooring AND the terrible business practices.
  • We got ours at Lowes for about $2.19/sq. ft.  It's Pergo laminate hardwood and we are very happy with it!

  • We actually got "allure" flooring from the Home Depot. Everyone who comes to our house thinks it's hardwood and is shocked when we tell them otherwise. It was dirt cheap and DH and I installed it ourselves. Granted it was time consuming and a bit of a PITA but DH and I have NO experience doing anything like that so for us to be able to even do it successfully was impressive.

We've really liked it so far. It gave us the look we wanted for a very affordable price. Over the past few months a few boards have "separated" in some spots but all we do is step on it and it goes back to normal and stays that way. I think it was because our floor underneath was so horrible and uneven and we didn't do anything to it before we laid these.

Here is our living room after we finished:

  • We got ours at Mr. Seconds and my DH installed them.  They look very similiar to the hardwoods that we have in the rest of the house.

  • Thanks for the suggestions!  I'm going to continue pricing around the area but I'll stay away from Lumber Liquidators!!!  DH and I have to decide on what color we're looking for- he likes the darker colored tile look, I like the light.  Also, I think light would look better for resale purposes- he doesn't think about stuff like that!!!  AHHHH, men!
  • Oh - and just because I watch HGTV all day : ).....Dk wood shows EVERYTHING....scratches, dust, etc. Lighter is WAY more practical.
  • Be  very careful with going "too cheap" most of the time when it comes to construction products and also furniture $=quality. I would try to stick with the big well known brands...Pergo, Armstrong, Shaw, Mohawk, Mannington, Wilsonart.

Definitely go to a few local flooring stores and/or lowes & home depot too just to actually be able to look at the products and also get their pricing. But there are also some great prices you can get by ordering online. We've ordered flooring from www.fastfloors.com before and they were wonderful to deal with!
