How to keep the kitten out of the tree?

So my artificial Christmas tree is now soaked because I have been spraying it with water all day when the kitten gets into it... Any suggestions on how to keep her out? There's nothing breakable on it or anything but I'm getting annoyed with the picking up of ornaments and stepping on hooks.

Re: How to keep the kitten out of the tree?

  • I have no advice on how to keep them out b/c we have this same issue, but I can say I highly suggest securing the tree with some fishing line or string to a wall. My dh "forgot" to do this, and the tree was knocked over.  everything was broken.

  • I think they sell bitter spray or something of the sort that's supposed to deter them.  Maybe ask at Petco/Petsmart, I'm sure they stock it this time of year.  Beyond that, I'd just keep correcting the cat when you see it going towards the tree...which I know you can't do all the time.  Maybe instead of the water trick (which never worked for our cat anyway) you can make a loud noise to startle him?  We've been pretty lucky in that our cat never really bothered with our tree.  The first year he tried to sit on the bottom "branches" (our tree is artificial) and bent them, we yelled at him and that was pretty much the end of it.  He just likes to lay under it now.
  • We had to resort to scat mats. The little rubber mats that you plug in to keep the pets off the furniture,counters,etc--they have one for the tree as well.. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752972

They have them as various pet stores and on line. That was just one of the links I found.

The other things to try is the little rubber mats with teeth like thingys.

  • This may not be the kindest approach and it really happened by accident, but my parents had a train around their tree and it was running and the cats decided to go checkout the tree I can't remember if the train bumped into them or got their tail...either way they wanted nothing to do with it again!

  • We have used liquid Vicks vap-o-rub.  They sell it next to/near the humidifiers.  What we do is put the Vicks in a small spray bottle and then spray the tree or some "fake snow"  (the cotton kind) and place it in the tree.  We did this the last two years and now this year the cats and the dogs won't mess with the tree.  They don't like the smell.

  • lol at the train idea. I am betting my kitten would knock it off the track. I am going to pick up some vicks at the store tomorrow. Hopefully that will do the trick!

  • The vicks wouldn't work for us. We even tried that to get the one dog to stop licking his one paw. He just licked it off.

  • We tried the bitter spray last year, they kept chewing on the tree. Might have to try the Vicks. And one of our little monsters broke the one limb when we weren't home!
