Is this ok for a business casual Christmas party?

We're going to DH's command's Christmas party on Friday night.  It's business casual, and as usual I'm stressed about what to wear.  He's wearing a suit, but probably no tie.

This is very similar to the dress I'm planning on wearing.  I got it awhile ago at Ann Taylor Loft and can't find a picture online.  The cut is the same, but the sleeves are a bit difference.  Same level of dressiness though.

This will be my first party around Admirals and Captains who are not family friends, and in an "official" Navy setting.   It's a little intimidating to me because they're so high ranking!  I'm used to being around Commanders and below who are closer to our age.

I'm planning on wearing textured black tights and heels, just like the picture.  The neckline on my dress is slightly lower, so I was going to wear pearls.  Hello stereotypical Navy wife.

  • This is perfectly fine.  Not especially festive, but appropriate.  Can you jazz up the jewelry and shoes?  I'd keep the tights, if it's short, for winter.

Yup, I can jazz it up!  Good suggestion.

The other dresses I have are more low cut and show cleavage, and I hate wearing those to Navy events because everyone critiques everyone else's clothes afterwards.  I don't want to end up as the "cleavage wife."

  • I think it's definitely appropriate.  Like Aria suggested, I would jazz it up with some fun accessories.

Ha! Thing is... my DH would thrive on that!... Then again, not in the Navy...

Yeah, our friend's wife got a boob job as a wedding present when they got married.  Everyone talked about her all the time because she loved to show them off.

Seriously, the Navy is like Gossip Girl for 40 year olds.

  • I think it looks appropriate for the type of dressyness you are going for
  • I like it, though I agree with Aria's suggestion to jazz it up a bit.

  • I agree with PP. Beautiful but jazz it up a bit, maybe with a sparkly bracelet or off color(as in Green or Red to suit the occasion) right hand ring.

Right after getting engaged, we moved to Jacksonville. DH went first, but we didn't have an apartment yet, so he stayed with a friend at NAS Jax (they had base housing). Her husband (who okayed it) was on deployment, so she had to tell everyone who asked or in conversation about her brother staying with her (or cousing, can't remember which) b/c the other wives in the neighborhood would email their husbands on ship and tell them how she was cheating on her husband while he was deployed, etc. And these were 20-30 yr old women. Oy!
