Congress and the BCS

Okay, so I stole another one, this one from the Sports board.  I've been out of the loop, I guess because I did not see this new gem yesterday:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091209/ap_on_sp_ot/us_bcs_congress

A House subcommittee has approved a bill for full committee that would make it illegal to promote a game as a national championship unless it results from a playoff system in an effort to prompt the BCS to switch to a playoff system for college football. Whaddyathink?

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

Re: Congress and the BCS

  • I personally have 2 responses:

    1) HA! I think it is hilarious that the governemnt is trying to do this.

    2) Wow, I think it is ridiculous that the government is trying to do this.

While I find it funny, and also do believe a playoff system would be better, I can not believe that out legislators think that they can force it on the BCS.  I think it's definitely overstepping the bounds of what our lawmakers are supposed to do and it is a little frightening that they think they have this power. And (this is not to blame the president) but I think this all came about because of his innocent comment that he prefers a playoff system. I don't think Congress would have even fathomed doing this before that comment was made.

  • There's a Sports board?

I don't even understand what the article is about. I can only gain sports knowledge in spurts, and I'm almost maxed out for this season.

    Hmm

  • The BCS may be incredibly stupid, I don't think it should be illegal.  Besides, doesn't Congress have anything better to do than worry about whether or not a game is really the national championship?  Healthcare, Wars, Disease, Unemployment, Business Accountability - take your pick, any one of these is a great place to start!

  • I think its completely ridiculous that Congress is worrying about this.  Our tax dollars could be spent much better.

I do think a playoff system should happen but I dont think it would be as successful for college football as a whole if it did.  Right now, despite the controversy every year, the BCS stimulates millions of dollars for a lot of teams.  If they had a playoff system, it would drag it out so much, I dont think people would do all the travelling and such that they can do for one bowl game.

  • 1 - Stupid thing to legislate.

2 - I'd love to see a playoff system, hate the BCS, but again it's a dumb thing to legislate.

3 - Miss Universe better watch out, they might be next.

  • I think everybody understands that the BCS is subjective, but that's the way it is.  Why does it have to be a playoff system?  We already have plenty of those.  Keep doin' what you're doin', colleges.
  • I agree that it's a silly thing for Congress to be bothering with. Although I can see how the BCS is frustrating, it's always worked out in our favor (sorry, USC ;)).

The playoff system makes me nervous.  My NFL team is undefeated , which in college football would surely put them in a BCS bowl.  But - an off day in the playoffs could ruin their Super Bowl chances.  It makes me way too nervous...

    ditto

  • I think bowl games are necessary because they make the regular season matter.  In basketball, you just need to play well enough to get into the tournament and then (ignoring seeding) everyone has a blank slate and those particular games determine the national champion.  The regular season is largely irrevelant.

In football, every game matters because it affects your ranking.  And, with the bowl season as it is, half the teams get to celebrate a successful end to the season--with a winning bowl game.  With a playoff system, every team except for the eventual winner would end their great season with a gut-wrenching loss.

  • I'm pretty sure I couldn't care less about football, but I find it hilarious that this has become a "congressional" matter. Good to know where your heads are at, folks. *insert overdramatic gratuitous eye roll here*
