Dilemma

Here's the deal ladies.   I am going to sound completely ungrateful and probably bratty, so please brace yourselves.

Our ILs got us a deep freezer for Christmas.  I'm not supposed to know, but MIL told my mom when I was in labor and my told me.

I have no clue wth we are going to do with a deep freezer.  Our regular freezer works just fine.  Plus, its going to be a huge PITA to get it down to the basement.

What do we do?  Do we keep it, or ask our ILs if its okay for us to return it?  I know that in like 5 years, we will need one once we have more kids and Hunter eats more, but for now...its just needless.

Re: Dilemma

  • You can tell your MIL she can give it to us, we'll take it!
  • Keep it.  Just put it in the basement and keep it unplugged until you need it.  You'll use it eventually and its just not worth hurting her feelings.  She probably was thinking you could use it for storing breast milk and if you make your own baby food . . . in any case, she is trying to be helpful so just smile and thank her.
  • Well...if its something you foresee needing in the pretty near future I would keep it. Put it somewhere out of the way and use it when its finally needed.
  • I think you girls are right, keeping it is probably our only option...I am going to go NUTS at Sam's Club buying frozen foods though now.

  • I agree with PP's.  You'll probably want it in a few years.
  • Ohhhhh, I would love one, but we don't have a basement (or a garage) and I can't imagine how expensive it would be to keep a deep freeze cold in the AZ summers outside.

That said, I agree with the other girls, keep it.  You might surprise yourself how quickly you end up using it.

  • You mean your reg freezer-that is with your refrigerator? or you have another one?

We have an upright freezer in the basement that is over 1/2 full! LOVE IT! When our neighbor's wife's restaurant 'closed', she brought over all of the goodies there and we were sooooo glad we had a freezer!  A chest freezer is a PIA, but still something's better 'n nothin'!

We've had ours for a year... use it all the time.

  • I'd keep it.  It seems like the best option, especially since you think you'll need it in a few years.

  • Definitely keep it, especially if you know you'll want it eventually. The money you'll end up saving on food from buying in bulk will pay to keep it running and then some! My parents have one and it's ALWAYS full, even now that it's just them at home.

Damn it. Of course the day there's dibs I'm not around.

We told our family a deep freezer was a good gift option for us bc even just for the two of us, we buy tons of meat when it's on sale and freeze it.

  • I'd love to have one as well- my parents have one and it so handy!  I miss being able to buy as much frozen stuff as I want b/c I'm limited in my freezer space.

  • Freezers are the best!  If you don't want to put it in the basement, how about the garage?  I seriously miss having 2 fridges and/or an extra freezer.
  • Definitely a keeper, especially if you think you're going to end up using it. DH wants to get one, but being as we're still in an apartment, there's just no room, and I don't want it in the kitchen.
  • I was going to say, "EW, BORING!" but after reading through the other responses, you should probably hang on to it. Just pretend like they didn't get you anything this year and then in a couple years when you need it, you'll be "surprised!" Stick out tongue
