XP: First RE Appt. Today

I met with Dr. Awadalla today for my consultation and I am excited! Basically he just confirmed what I already knew and said that I pretty much have 'textbook' PCOS. He gave me a script for Metformin, and a new drug that is taking the place of Clomid. He suggests I go on the metformin and a low carb diet and once I lose 5 lbs, begin taking the meds on my next cycle. He wrote down the target date of pregnancy to happen before 6/10 and I can live with that!!

  • That is pretty good news!  Not to long untill you should be KU!!  Sucks to have to try and lose 5 Ibs around the holidays but what can you do.  I am getting scared that I might have PCOS.  No testing done just way to much time reading things online.  Anyways GL!!!
  • Did he give you Femera? I have been on that for most of this year and it seems to work better for me than Clomid.

  • I have a book, something like the Complete Idiot's/Dummies guide to a low GI diet.  The same authors wrote a diabetic cookbook (again Idiots or Dummies).  The recipes are pretty normal which I liked.  Good luck!

  • Good luck! Metformin was great for my PCOS and was a big factor in our eventual BFP!
  • Katie...that is the meds he gave me! Thanks I couldn't think of the name. I have been on metformin in the past and it made me very sick. Hopefully this time I can take it without issues.

Were you given the Met ER? The extended release version has less s/e than the regular one and you can take all the pills once a day (I take 4 after dinner). Also, Immodium and Pepto are your friends if that is your problem.

Also, with the Femera, you have to make sure you are not pregnant before you take it because it can cause birth defects in male fetuses if taken while pregnant. Other than that, I have very little s/e from the Femera.

  • The doctors at IRH are great :) I agree about the met extended release. I have also found that it helps if I take them after dinner. GL!

  • Thanks ladies!  I did try the Metformin ER before, but I think they had me on too high of a dose! I could physically tell it was bringing my sugar down and I just slept the entire time and I was so sick to my stomach. They had me taking 2 900mg ER pills at bedtime but in the morning I couldn't get out of bed and I was so useless most of the day. I told Dr. Awadalla about it so he gave me a lesser dose and told me to take them at dinner, so hopefully that helps me.
