WNY - Pediatrician Rec?

DH and I are in the middle of adopting a child internationally. We're trying to find a pediatrician who specializes in treating/seeing internationally adopted children. Specifically, someone who has extensive knowledge of medical issues faced by those in third world countries.

I've called our regular physician to ask for recs and they are still making calls for me, with no luck yet. I know it's a long shot, but if anyone has a rec, please let me know.

Also, if we are unable to find anyone who specializes in that, can you give me some of your recs for other pediatricians? We live in the T/NT/Amherst area - but we honestly don't care too much on the area. TIA!!

Re: WNY - Pediatrician Rec?

  • We see a Family Practice.. We used to go to East Aurora Peds but they were awful so now we go to EA Family Practice. They're great, but they are a family practice, NOT a pediatrician, which I know is not for everyone.

I don't know anything about anyone who specializes in international children.. but congrats and good luck with the adoption!

  • We LOVE our pediatrician! We go to Suburban Pediatrics http://www.suburbanpediatrics.com/ the doctors there are wonderful and you can select one or two of them that you'd like your child to see regularly. They have evening and saturday and sunday office hours which was so important for us because of our work schedules. They said they try to cater to working parents. They have sick and well visit waiting rooms and exam rooms, and 2 lactacian consultants right there at the office. They also have a "expecting parents" night that they do I think on the 3rd thursday of each month, you just have to call and sign up and it lets you meet some of the doctors, ask questions about them, and take a tour of their practice. It was super nice.

  • I know there is one in Rochester, I had a friend who had her, even though her children were not adopted.  I think it was Long Pond Pediatrics.  Maybe they would know of someone in Buffalo?
  • Right now we go to Amherst Peds. They have pros and cons. It's hard to get a well visit with the same doc. The nurses/office ladies on the phone, specifically one named Judy...are rude. Sometimes the wait is long, sometimes it's super short. They have a well and sick entrance - which we LOVE!....doctors are great, we've seen them all by now. We really like the reg nurses. They have newborn nurses....both are nice...but one is a little rough around the edges. There is a doc on call after hours...so you call and leave a message with a nurse and she lets the doc know and he/she calls you back within 15 minutes. They have sat hrs.

One drawback for us is that they are pretty far from where we live....we'll probably switch b/c of it.

  • We went to Tonawanda Peds in East Amherst.  We are in the process of switching to Carrow St. Pediatrics in Orchard Park, but only because we moved and it was too far to travel especially if we needed to be seen for something quick.  Tonawanda Peds was great.  The East Amherst office was small and extremely accomodating and if you needed the after hours you could always go to the East Robinson Rd. location.  I don't know if any of the doctors specialized in international children, but they were all very qualified.

I would find somewhere that you feel comfortable and you get great care.

  • we have friends that adopted form Columbia and i believe they go to Amherst Peds. like previous poster said i've heard pros & cons form them about that office, i think their biggest complaint has been about the wait time.
