It's official: Kelly to Notre Dame

Re: It's official: Kelly to Notre Dame

  • Saw this when it broke on ESPN. Read the article, too...I feel bad for the players. Tonight's their banquet, and I hope this isn't overshadowing it. Can't imagine how they'd feel if their coach who said he was staying announced on a night like this that he was peacin' out...

  • When did he say he was staying?  Over the last couple of weeks, he's been pretty open that he was open to the ND job.

  • I feel awful for the Cincy players.  I can't believe he announced before their bowl game.

  • According to the article, he was saying that a few weeks ago - it wasn't recently, of course. But the players still had hope he'd stay.

Looks like he's not coaching them through the bowl game, either. Hm.

I don't think he had the option of waiting until afterwards.  ND wants someone who can start recruiting yesterday.  He can't focus on recruiting if he's preparing the Bearcats for a bowl game.  I have no doubt that ND said now or never.  I can't blame them for that, and I can't blame Kelly for accepting, but it does suck for the players.

I agree with this. Universities (especially big time football universities) aren't going to give the coach that much time and flexibility...it just doesn't happen. My DH is a DI coach and when he was hired at his current school, he was told to go recruiting two days after he accepted..before we'd moved or anything. And he doesn't even coach a big time sport like football..

  • Eh, its fairly standard to do it  before a bowl.

ND sent out a nice letter to all students confirming.

  • I can't believe that he didn't announce it to his players before it hit the media.  I get that it had to come out before the bowl but come on they should have known (and just as a moral thing he shouldn't have had it upstage the banquet like it has).  And as far as not coaching them in the bowl it may be "the way it is" but it is still messed up to and downright awful IMO.

Better to get it out in the open and have the players learn it and move on, than everyone be wondering about it for weeks, IMO.

I believe he was planning to officially 'tell' his players at the banquet.

  • you know I have been thinking about this, and while what Kelly has done at UC is amazing and will probably never be done again there...I think that ND is once again pulling up short with another coach that needed just a little more time and experience..JMO and I hope I am wrong

This. I think it's kind of a sucky situation all around. I feel bad for Cincy's players.

I'm actually impressed with how open and honest he's been with them. He flat out told them he was going to interview with ND. Most coaches deny it. he was very open with them throughout the process. I'm pretty sure they were quite aware of what was going to happen.

  • Yes it is great that he told them that he was going to interview but if that was the route he wanted to take then he needed to stick with the open and honest route not this: "The Tuesday when we were practicing for Pittsburgh, he said he loves it here and he loves this team and loves coaching here and his family loves it here," Pike said."  All of the players that have been quoted said they had feelings that he wasn't going to stay so I don't think it was about being open because they already "knew".  I completely understand that this was his dream job and I completely understand why he took it and would never fault him for it.  BUT with that being said I think he could have had it go down much better.  Announce it the day before the banquet, announce it the day after, not put them in a meeting room after the banquet and tell him.  To me that is taking a night that was supposed to be about the players, coaching staff, and this incredible season and making it all about him and ND.

    That's a very good point.

  • I'm so shocked not really! :)

Also, Bo Pelini coached LSU all the way through the Sugar Bowl (granted, he was an assistant coach) and didn't start at Nebraska until January.  Still pulled out a decent recruiting class, too!

I think it blows that he's leaving his players hanging, but whatever.  Good luck to him at ND!  I suspect he might need it.

That's for sure. It seems like a cursed job as of late.

  • Meh.  As much as it sucks that he's leaving UC, this alum isn't surprised.  The head coaching job at UC has always been a stepping stone of sorts to "bigger and better things"...now, whether or not the ND job is actually bigger and better (and I fear the latter will not be the case) remains to be seen.  It sucks for the team, but I think you'll be hard pressed to find someone who actually thought he'd stay at UC even if ND offered him the job.

It's a hard pill to swallow to be a fan of a team that went 12-0 and perhaps should have been part of the national championship conversation, and know that your school will never be good enough for a coach to stay long-term.

I am not a Cincy fan (other than pulling for Big East teams in general), but I felt similarly about WVU two years ago. This has not turned out particularly well for us, but at least we're doing better than Michigan! Big Smile

  • I agree it sucked to announce it on the night of the banquet, but I think he was trapped. The  info was leaked. Everything I heard said they were going to announce today. But sources leaked and they were forced to announce yesterday. I think he was trapped into telling them that day.

I see your point but I think it takes away from the players and their season.  I think ideally you shouldn't interview until the end of the season so that would avoid a little of the talk if he hadn't really considered the job yet.

In todays day and age, I just don't think thats possible. Recruiting would hit the sh!tter. If he had so no to interviewing, ND wouldn't have waited around. It would have been a horrible idea to go without a coach until January.

I'm surprised so many are angry about this since its pretty much the norm.

  • I think as a ND fan it is easier to see the pluses of the situation just as it is easier to see the minuses of the situation as a UC fan.  IMO it just comes down to there were a million ways the situation could have been handled better so that the players weren't hurt.  As far as him being forced to announce I think he could have just asked for ND to not confirm until the press conference today.  When asked Thur it would have been as easy as saying "There will be a press conference about that tommorrow I want tonight to be about the players and coaching staff" and then had a meeting to tell the players tommorrow morning.  I personally am not angry about him taking the job in the least.  And I have accepted that him deciding to leave before the bowl is just they way it is but the way it was announced to the players is inexcusable in my book.  They played there butts off for him and as he said helped to give him this opportunity and I think they deserved a little more consideration and respect than to take away their night.

  • I think the players from both teams get the short end of the stick. I do not understand why the NCAA does not make it illegal to do all this stuff until after the post season.

I don't blame Kelly for interviewing before the Sugar Bowl. Like you said--that's how it had to be. The ND job would not be there in January. But I just wish that this weren't the way things worked, because it sucks for Cincy.

    I completely agree with that.

  • Coach Kelly got his start at my alma mater (Grand Valley State), so I'm really happy that he's made it as far as he has in so short a time.  To think he was taking a Division 2 school to the National Championship in 2003, and now he's at an elite Division 1 school.

Honestly I had the same thoughts about Cincy when I heard he wouldn't be coaching them in the bowl game.  I hope they are still able to fully prepare, get their heads in the game, and make a decent showing against Florida.

I'm just really hoping that GVSU's current head coach doesn't take the defensive coordinator position at ND.  While it would be a great step for him, I just worry about the future of our team.  He has said to the media that he is staying, but something makes me not trust it.

  • He left GVSU to come to my alma mater CMU (Central MI University). When he was interviewing for the UC job he told the team, the students, and the community that he was happy where he was, that he had no intention of leaving, and that he wanted to stay with CMU. Then he left for UC. Just like he just did to UC with ND. I bet if you asked anybody that was at CMU when he left, they would tell you that everything that we were seeing/hearing/reading indicated he would leave.

Now we at CMU are hoping that his replacement (Butch Jones) does not leave CMU to refill Kelly's position at UC!

Jones is good. He was an assistant coach at WVU for a couple years and was a candidate to replace Rodriguez in 2007. It looks like he's a top candidate for the Cincy job now. (Sorry to CMU if that happens though...the coaching carousel is rough!)
