Dog afraid of snow

I posted this on the pet board too....

We have a 1.4 year old Boston Terrier. She is a little weird by being afraid of many things at first, but gets used to them and is fine. Well, turns out she is afraid of snow. She will not even go out in it. It's been about 2 weeks now and she still won't go out. We have to literally carry her out away from the house and wait for her to go to the bathroom. Lately she has been refusing to go (we stood out there for 15 minutes this morning and yesterday). She has been peeing in her crate and pooping in the 2nd bedroom. She is fully house trained so I know it is the snow freaking her out. Any tips?

Re: Dog afraid of snow

  • sry this is long!

my rescue dog was afraid of grass when I got him. One of the requirements for having him was to have a porch so he could go potty on it. Well, I didn't really want him to be peeing and pooping on my porch all the time. I had to carry him to the middle of the yard and he would just stand and not go potty. To get him over it, I just started putting him on the leash, at a fast pace I would  walk him out the door and then continuing into the grass, even when he was basically being dragged. Bulldogs are pretty stubborn and I had to pull him and just keep walking without letting him stop. Once he would stop, he would try to pull and not walk again because he had time to think about being afraid. Everyday I would just walk him in the grass a couple of laps in the yard and not let him tug on the leash to stop. The best way to walk is like you are on a mission and you are not stopping no matter how bad the dog wants to..just keep looking forward!! This gets him used to walking on it AND it makes him think u are the leader and its no big deal to walk in grass/snow.

Since it's a little different than grass, you might want to put boots or something on the dog because maybe it's hurting the paws because its so cold, just a suggestion!

  • You can also try shoveling a path.  We used to have to do that every time it snowed for my grandma's dog or he wouldn't go out.  Just a small path from the door to wherever you want them to use the potty.
