***Annelise's mom Jaime***

Hey Jaime,

I am just wondering how CDing your LO is going...when did you start?  Did the PFs and covers fit?  Are you using the jelly roll fold?  Just curious.  We have a package of Swaddlers for the first week or so (until her meconium passes) and then I plan to CD.   Also, are you using cloth wipes or sposies?  I have 36 cloth wipes and plan to just try warm water and then, if need be, some sort of homemade solution in a squirt or spray bottle.  I got a Lionheart Wipes Warmer used for $6 and we'll see if that works (I have read that cloth wipes do well in the warmer) otherwise we'll probably do a thermos of warm water on the changing table, since the bathroom is down the hall and it takes forever for our hot water tap to heat up!

~Lori

P.S.  when will we see some pics of Miss A's fluffy butt?  I love babies in CDs.

I have been meaning to write this as a separate post, but I've been too busy so your questions reminded me.

I'm not sure if you remember my cloth diaper questions, etc., but we have been using cloth part time. I was not a fan of the pre folds, but have found this diaper called FLIP (made my BG) and I wish they had them when Ashton was first born. I wish I could return all the other cloth diapers I have since these fit Ashton to a "t" and not too bulky like a lot of the CD's I had been trying. They come with a diaper cover and inserts and I never thought I would like the two pieces as opposed as the AIO's but to my surprise, I actually like them better than my Organic AIO BG.

Sorry, just wanted to through that out there and they are super affordable!  I am gong to be ordering a few more covers and inserts.

    Butting out:-)

  • hey Lori, things are going great with CD'ing - I love it!! I'm so glad that Brent wanted to do CDs b/c I was pretty on the fence about it.

we started after we used up the stash of free diapers from the hospital (about 30) and the package of 60 that we had pre-purchased.  my milk was late to come in so she had meconium until day 6. it was shortly after that (can't remember when now - about day 10?) that we switched to cloth.  I had originally wanted to wait until the cord fell off but that didn't happen until day 14 and we wanted to start the cloth sooner...so I tried putting some on her to see if they would rub on the cord and they didn't so we went ahead and started using them :) she was about 7lbs when we started CDing and the duos fit great.

speaking of disposable diapers - i love the swaddlers! we got those too... they have the yellow line that turns green when they wet their diaper and that was really helpful for me in the beginning to track the # of wet diapers she had - the disposables are so absorbent it is hard to tell if they have peed or not otherwise (at least for me it was)

we've been using the orange edge GMD PFs w/the duo covers.... for the first week or so she never dirtied a cover and I thought to myself, "why'd I buy so many covers?" of course as soon as I thought that, she started having more explosive poos that got the covers dirty ;) we have 6 but honestly 4 would be plenty since they dry so fast (we even hang them to dry).  I love the PF's - they dry so quickly and aren't that hard to use at all.  we are doing the jelly roll fold, which at first when we were changing her diapers at the hospital I thought to myself, "how on earth are we going to fold CDs when she is this squirmy?!" but it works out ok and isn't too hard at all.  when Brent first saw me do it he was a bit intimidated but after doing it once or twice he totally got the hang of it - i'm so proud of him b/c i know some dads will only use AIOs :)  I have one xs thirsties cover and the rest are duos - I honestly can't tell the difference in fit but of course the duos will last her longer (i got the xs before the duos came out)

I am familiar w/the flip diapers that Renee mentioned..they only came out in Nov and I got our CD stash long before that. I've heard tons of great things about the flip system on diaper swappers but we won't be trying them since I've already invested in a complete stash for Annalise...we already have the next sizes in PFs for her.

we do have AIOs for going out... I have tried bum genius 3.0, very baby, bottombumpers and sposoeasy AIOs on her and my favorite so far are the sposo's. the gussets fit around her legs really well on those.  I'm sure a chunkier-thighed baby would fit the other diapers well but her legs are pretty skinny (though they are starting to chunk up a little!)

I have Gro Baby AI2s and bum genius organic one size as well but haven't tried them on her yet just b/c I've heard that the one size diapers seem to swallow them until they are bigger...though she is almost 10 lbs now so I may give one a try soon.

oh and to answer your earlier question from a few weeks ago about doublers...i don't think it's necessary unless you have a super heavy wetter.  Annalise has slept as long as 5 hr 45 min overnight and woken up with a SOAKED prefold, but no leaks! i think as they get older and their bladder gets bigger that will change, but for now we are doing ok w/o a doubler.

we do use cloth wipes and I love it! I can't imagine going through so many disposable wipes, not to mention the chemicals in them.  i have a squirt bottle i got from walmart that we use - it's filled with just plain old water and it works great. we don't even have a warmer or anything.  maybe it's mean not to warm it, but she already screams bloody murder when we're changing her diaper (before the wipe touches her bottom - she just hates getting dressed/undressed) so I figure it doesn't make a difference if it's warm or not.  I also like that if she has a really poopy butt, I can spray her bottom w/the bottle to get it extra clean.  aside from overnight when we're trying to get some sleep, I change her fairly often. the nice thing about using natural fabrics like cotton is that they are pretty good about telling you sooner rather than later that their diaper is dirty...so we haven't had any diaper rash yet *knock on wood*

we have 36 PFs and I end up doing laundry every other day (she goes through about 20-24 diapers/day on average b/c sometimes she refuses to poop in a wet diaper until I put a clean diaper on her!!!)...we've been using liquid Tide HE (cold cycle, hot cycle, extra rinse, dry on hot) and haven't had any skin sensitivity or stink issues yet. oh and here's a tip - put a clean, dry towel in w/the wet diapers in the dryer and they will dry quicker!

I know, I need to get some fluffy pics! I meant to get some when she was super tiny to show how the duos fit a tiny newborn, but just never got around to it...

Renee, feel free to butt in any time! :) I do have a question about the flips, even though i probably won't buy them since we already have enough diapers...but does the insert do a good job of containing the explosive EBF poops? seems like w/the shape of the insert, you'd be getting poo on the cover all the time? or are these more like pocket diapers?

you can sell your used diapers on diaper swappers if you want to use the flip system exclusively! no point in letting them sit around collecting dust. I have yet to try the bum genius organic AIO but if I like them i might be interested in buying them off of you... i'll let you know after I try the ones I have...

oh and you might want to try sposoeasy diapers..they are AIOs but they are pretty trim and dry much faster than the bum genius organic diapers.

To be they are the same as using prefolds with a cover.  You need about 3 or so covers (Ashton still poops about 5 times a day) a day.  I personally like  them better since there is no need to fold, just lay in the insert and your done.  They also fit Ashton's thighs too:-)  I did try the spoeasy but didn't love them. I guess it is all personal preference and baby body type.

I do plan to list them somewhere and if any girls are reading this and want to purchase some prefolds, covers and some AIO's let me know.
