DH and I have differing opinions on the following and so wanted to see what you ladies thought...

If you have a target amount that you want to spend on somone for a gift but you get something on sale, do you count the retail price or the sale price? Ex: Say I want to spend $75 on my sister. I got a $65 bling hoodie at VS for $16 out of pocket...do I need to buy her ~$60 more worth of stuff?

I voted for the sale price, but I think there could be a compromise. Like you scored a great deal, but I would maybe get some of the VS body lotion or something cute to go with it. I love their Sensuous Escape Cocoa Butter lotion

. Anyway, I might not go to the full 75.00 amount, but I would add something to the sale gift.

Ha! It's funny that you say that b/c I actually also bought her a $12 Love Spell gift set for $2, too. VS sent me about a bazillion $10 off $10 coupons.

I said actual sale price b/c god forbid someone would need to return a gift and find out how little I really spent (insert eye roll here!). However, this year I feel like I went crazy running all over to get the perfect gifts at the perfect price. I feel like I bought too much (even if I didn't spend too much) and some people won't appreciate the effort. I bought a ton of gifts for the kids in our families and I feel like this year we crossed the line. I worry about the kids becoming materialistic and I feel like I'm adding to it this year.

I go with the sale price bc I figure people are like me and end up returning a lot of gifts. I don't want them to only get $10 when I was supposed to spend $30.

I say retail price for two reasons.

Firstly, there is no way ever to come in under budget on Christmas if you max out what you have budgeted (but this may not be important to you). I am of the mindset that just because I can spend a lot doesn't mean I need to.

Secondly, I think the disparity of number of gifts when opening would be awkward. We open gifts together so if I bought one thing for John costing $75 but bought Mary 6 things totaling $75, I think it would be awkward at opening time to have John receive a single gift when Mary is receiving many gifts. Particularly when some of the things Mary received appear expensive. I think what is more important than "spending what we said we would" is finding a reasonably-priced gift that I believe the recipient will enjoy. And hooray if I can do it under budget.

This is gong to sound horrible, but for me it depends on the recipient. If it's for one of my parents, I always truly spend the budgeted amount. If it's for a niece or nephew, I don't spend more if I find something on sale.

It's the gift and thought that matters not the price. Some of my favorite gifts I know didn't cost a lot.. but rather they mean a lot.

So... if something is marked down, while I might go "add" something to it, I'm not going to spend my entire 'budget' away... that just gives me some more wiggle room for when I'm struggling to find a gift for someone else (does that make sense?)

I never come in under budget at Christmas and in all honesty it's always a wash in the end...

After reading into it more, I use the price it was before any gift certs or coupons. That is the actual price of the item, if you werent using those gc's or discounts it would have been full price.

I voted for "how much you paid", but honestly, for me it depends on the person.

Like, if it were something for work, or a neighbor or friend that we just exchange presents but it's kinda lost it's meaning, I would go with the retail price.

But for someone like my sister, husband, daughter, anyone that I get JOY from buying things for, I would go based on how much I paid for it. It's like I get to buy more, because I was extra thrifty. Does that make sense?

Thanks for all the input ladies. I like to hope that people actually like and keep the gifts that I get them but I can see how that's not always the case lol. I agree that it does matter who the gift is for and lean towards giving more to those that are close to me.

Where I get a bit iffy is for those people that would rather have gift cards...I always feel bad b/c I can't put my bargain hunting skills to work so what you see is what you get...this is why I HATE giving gc's! lol
