Rant: Anyone working Xmas Eve Night?

I'm getting nervous about Xmas Eve.  The work schedule hasn't been posted yet at my retail job.  The mall where I work closes at 6 PM on 12/24, which stinks for employees. If I get unlucky and get the closing shift, I may ask my manager if I can leave an hour early so I can make the 1 hour drive to my brother's house for our big and only family gathering which is also my brother's birthday.

Does anyone else have the bad luck of working the night of 12/24? If so, how are you dealing with it?

Re: Rant: Anyone working Xmas Eve Night?

  • its not bad, both DH and I work xmas eve and xmas- we get to stay home and have to be on call though.  Have done it for years.

  • I managed a store at a pretty significant sized mall here, and you might be surprised.. our Christmas Eve schedule was always pretty light... and the mall was pretty much DEAD.

  • No sympathy from me, my family owns a liquor store / wine shop.

    Christmas Eve

    New Years Eve

They're a busiest days of the year, we've never been able to have a family party or celebration. It's just the way it goes when you work in retail. We're even open on Thanksgiving Day.

Still sucks though, but you've gotta make the best of it.

  • I am a nurse so I frequently work holidays. We have to either work xmas eve or day every year. It sucks, but hospitals don't close for the holidays.

  • I work in retail too and have had to work Christmas Eve almost every year.. but it's usually really dead and we close by 6, I think it's kind of fun seeing who's shopping last minute (usually guys)!
  • Not any more, but i have before.  I don't have any suggestions, just to commiserate with you.  Most stores have to stay open if they are part of a mall, as it is in their contract, so it would depend on how busy it was and how many people were scheduled, whether you would get to leave early.

  • My hubby has to work until 9:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve Night.  I will be at dinner at my parents' house.  Yup..just me, mom, dad, sister...oh and my in laws!  Party!!!

My parents' invited them before we found out the work schedule so it sounds funny, but it sould be fun!

  • my DH also works in retail.  He is a sales leader so he often gets stuck with the hours people don't want to work so he is working Christmas eve until 6:00pm and the 26th from 7-4.

  • My DH works front desk at a hotel (last year in this job!!!).  He's working 7pm-3am Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  I'm sure he'll work NYE as well.

When I was in the hotel business, I got stuck on night audit on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve.  Being a manger was pretty crummy....I left that job fairly quickly after that.

  • I will be working, pretty use to it by now. Since being in retail for about 10 years I have never not worked Christmas Eve. I work till 5 (our store closes at 6.) I am also thinking of leaving 15 mins early to make it to a friends house for dinner/church. Our store is closed Christmas Day and I actually get the next day off so I am excited. I work NYE only till 4pm and have New Years day off. (which is my first in the whole 10 years being with this company!)
