Greg and I have been talking about probably moving in 2010.
(Our landlord is screwing around with getting the bathroom fixed - after we spent a week peeling/scraping/Kilzing and repainting the bathroom, he just can't be bothered to hire someone to come look at what he knew was an issue WHEN WE MOVED IN. There are little holes in the tub surround, which is where we believe water is seeping behind the surround and mold has grown. The ceiling and ventilation fan look DISGUSTING - you can clean the mold away and it regrows within a few weeks.)
We could really use some thoughts/prayers for a decent place as we're not in the market to buy a house yet, but with a dog, it's hard to find a decent place for a reasonable price. I just want to find a nice, normal, safe neighborhood, with nice, normal neighbors. It really bites that we get discriminated against because we have a larger dog. We've had her since she was 11 weeks old and she's caused NO damage to the duplex whatsoever. Greg and I are more likely to damage something than she is. LOL
Re: I hate doing this (T/Ps)
I feel your pain, we are sort of going through the same thing, we are half assed looking but even with two cats it's hard.
Lots of great apartment vibes coming your way
That's exactly it: people often label "No pets" or even "Small dogs only". If people would give her a chance, I'd give them references stating she's well behaved, well trained, and non-destructive. She can be a little vocal, but our neighbors' 4 pound Yorkie is SEVERAL TIMES more vocal - we hear her ALL THE EFFING TIME. Xena growls, sometimes barks (when she thinks someone's arrived) or when told.
GL! It's hard having an "aggressive" dog.
We're playing w/the idea of moving again too...our old neighbors found a foreclosure in their new neighborhood that we're going to look into. Not sure what we'll do w/our house though.
.: Diary of a Recovering Runner :.
I saw this on one of the properties and thought "Eff you if you're going to take my money because I have a dog only for other people's kids (the 2-legged kind you actually birth) to cause more damage but you don't charge them a NON-REFUNDABLE deposit because kids cause damage!" I'm fine making an extra deposit - that makes sense.
Don't get me wrong - I understand the landlords' POV - you have to CYA and protect yourself from the financial implications pets can bring to a property. But it drives me wild when we're automatically "bad tenants" because we own a pet. I'm fine and am more than willing to make an extra deposit, etc, but to not have an opportunity to even get it back?! Unfair, IMO.
Our insurance won't cover "aggressive breeds" either. German Shepherds are not among the list. But that whole categorization of breeds being evil pisses me off as well.
Yeah I don't understand why the depost is non refundable?
It's really a cover your a** type thing. We as pet owners often do not realize what odors, hair, other things our pets leave behind because we are accustomed to them. No matter how clean you are your pet is going to leave a mark. For instance, we had a property they had a cat and dog. Were very clean and did a great job cleaning when they left. We refunded their deposit and new tenants move in. A few months down the road the tenants call and their child is getting really sick and they've come down to it having to be something in the house. Turns out the duct work had animal hair and dander in it. We had to pay to have those cleaned. We weren't charging non-refundable deposits at that point so it came out of our pocket. All pet owners are not bad but unfortunately we have to live with that stereotype. It's something we were aware of when we got our pets. It is a shame and frustrating at times but thats the life we live in.
I imagine that might've been tough!! Chows (or any mix with Chow) is actually one of the "aggressive" breeds, so I can't imagine the battle she had!
I believe she had to pay a large non-refundable amount to even rent the apartment and now has to pay a monthly pet rent as well. Just plain ridiculous if you ask me since her dog wouldn't do any harm to anyone (except Toby...her dog doesn't like him for some reason).
