H's family is doing a gift exchange this year since they're about 17 of us. We each drew names and both of us got people who wanted a Visa GC or cash. The dollar amount this year is $50. Call me silly, but I think it's weird to just give cash as the gift for a gift exchange. We're still going to do it since that's what they wanted, but it's still strange. We found out everyone but us asked for GC's or cash.
Would it be terrible to play a joke at first by handing them "Johnny Cash" CD's and telling them that's what they meant by "Cash", then giving them their real gift? (H thought about doing this.)
Re: Secret Santa- Cash Gifts
To my mind when the gift giving is reduced to essentially an exchange of money, it's time to let it go. Clearly everyone is saying, I don't want you to pick stuff for me, I want to pick my own stuff.
Why not focus on spending time with the family.
Or if everyone is hellbent on gifts then set a $5 limit to the name drawing and focus on being creative and having fun with it.
This is exactly what happened with my family with everyone wanting a gift card or cash. After that, we decided it was silly to even give gifts! You know, give a $50 gift card just to get one in return.
I like the cash CD idea!
My family has been doing a $10 gift exchange for years, and every year it gets worse. So my mom came up with a great idea.
Instead of buying $10 gifts/GC for each other, we are buying groceries and donating it to a local homeless shelter/food bank. Much better than impersonal money. I love the idea.
