my friend had a surprise during delivery!

my friend gave birth early today. she's expecting to have a baby boy. they were actually planning to name him Rafael. i got an email from our other friend/her SIL that she actually gave birth to a GIRL!!! how crazy is that! that was totally unexpected. i guess this is one of the few times that the ultrasound was wrong. i don't think they were prepared for a baby girl. i would have to get her some girly baby stuff!

Re: my friend had a surprise during delivery!

  • wow I wonder how that happened! we were worried about that too though so at our follow up ultrasound we asked if she was "still" a girl!
  • we were worried about that too!  I remember asking the dr after they pulled him out!!
  • Wow!  Good thing we have all gender neutral stuff... that'd be crazy if you went all out one way or another and then got a big surprise on delivery day!

  • OMG, that's crazy.  I don't get how that happens.  Especially if you see the anatomy on the u/s.

I've had 4 u/s (12w, 16w, 20w, 28w) and they all looked like a girl.  Definitely no boy parts.  But then I had a dream last week that I gave birth and it was a boy.  And I was SO upset.  If it happened in real life, I would be really upset.  Everything is pink and we have no boy names that we agree on.  Yikes.

  • OMG how weird! Was the gender ultrasound unclear? On ours, we had one twin spread eagled for the camera so it was pretty obvious lol, but for the second one the tech actually thought it was a girl at first because of the angle, so I could see how mistakes could be made (although I would have thought that normally it would be the other way around - a boy being mistaken for a girl).
  • My little brother was supposed to be a girl... THAT was a surprise!
  • Wow, that's crazy. I thought that it's always right if they think it's a boy from the u/s!?! What a surprise!

  • Exactly why I think I'd never find out the gender ahead of time!  LOL!
  • Whoah!!  I could not even imagine that adjustment!

  • Eek!  I'll freak out if that happens...mainly because the nursery is very girlie...once I was told Team Pink I ran with it, including a very pink rocker/recliner.

We have some netural clothing and the carseat, stroller, swing, etc. but if we end up with a son my mom's going to have to go out and get some things for us ASAP!

  • Whoa, that's quite a surprise!

  • At our last prenatal appointment (before our big ultrasound), the doctor warned us that this happens sometimes and that some people get really really upset.  Stick out tongue  It would definitely be a shock if it happened to us but I don't think we'd get angry as long as the baby was healthy.

I hope your friend and her family is adjusting well to this surprise!  Smile

My doctor told me the same thing. I don't think it will happen for us, because it was very clear that at least one of the twins was a boy...but from what I've read, those scans are only about 80% accurate, so it certainly can - and does! - happen.
