need unisex gift ideas

My DH's family does an exchange of $20 limit gifts.  The ages range from 25-80 male and female of course. We just pick a package and if we like it keep, if not steel one from someone else.  I am not a fan of this so I'm lost.  I haven't a clue of what to get this year except an ornament with $20 cash.  Thats so lame.  I wish they would at least make it $50 but they won't budge.  HELP!

Re: need unisex gift ideas

  • Gift basket with gift card to movie rental place, couple of bags of microwave popcorn or candy and a liter coke. A game (Apples to Apples, Scene It), Wine glasses and bottle of wine.
  • I have a gift swap with these same demographics for DH's extended family. We got a waffle maker from Target with a package of cinnamon apple waffle mix from Home Goods for one gift and a gift card to Fandango (people are spread out, so this was better than gift card to a certain movie theatre) for the other gift. We got the gift card from Kroger because it was convenient but you can buy them online, too.
  • Hi!  There is a "Micro-Tool" thing I got on LLBean's website for my DH and FIL in stainless.  (20.00) - I'm thinking it's so cool - I wouldn't mind having one myself... so it could work for both genders.

I get free shipping on LL Bean because I have a credit card with them - however they have other specials re: shipping and a 10.00 gift card with purchase of 25.00 and Free shipping on purchases of 75.00 or more.

    Here is the link:

     Good Luck!

  • Booze seems to go over well in some circles.  There's usually a board game or two, or a Steelers sweatshirt in my IL's swap.  I bought Uno Attack this year out of desperation.  I like it, though, so I'll just try and pick it myself!

  • scarves, slippers, beanies/hats, mugs, gift cards, wine glasses, bottle of wine or holiday liquor, candles, soap (the kind that are wrapped in gorgeous paper or special designed), board games, last year for DH's office party we brought a gorgeous ceramic juicer and pitcher from Anthropologie and slippers from Restoration Hardware and both were highly fought over.

  • The 3 most popular gifts at the last exchange I went to were wine, Starbucks GCs, and scratch-offs.

  • Honestly you can get a lot for $20 if you search things out...we did a $10 per person gift exchange w/ friends this week & another $10 per person one for H's work party.  Both parties were fun & there were some great gifts!

One thing we did was a gift bag of holiday candy like peppermint bark/etc.  Other ideas are gift cards to Starbucks, the movies...honestly think most people like practical or edible gifts!

  • My family also does this! Last year the gifts everyone LOVED where: ShamWows, MagLight, alcohol, and a car emergency kit. This year I picked up the game Apples to Apples! Hope this helps you. Enjoy the holiday season! :)

  • Board games are always fun... Also, a "Luck" basket with a horseshoe, rabbit foot, and scratch-off lotto tickets always goes over well. Anything "As Seen on TV" makes a fun addition - I think Walgreens typically has a pretty big selection of this stuff.

Good luck - hope you have a blast!

  • I had to buy two $15 unisex presents for ages 25 to 93 - I bought Scrabble and the movie The Hangover.  I figured each present doesn't have to work for everyone since there is stealing/swapping involved.

When we did it last year, I received a coffee press.

  • I have used the movie basket idea before and it works great.  You could even include a Christmas movie if you don't want to put in a gift card to Blockbuster or movie tickets.

Food is good, unless there are food allergies.  I loved the waffle maker idea.  How about a plate of homemade cookies or fudge on a serving platter?  There are tons of cute Christmasy ones out there for less than $20.  Or a couple of mugs with specialty coffe tucked inside?  That would probably still leave you with some money left over to get a gift card from Starbucks and put it in there too.

You could also give 2 rolls of quarters.  Small heavy gifts are very mysterious under the tree and anyone would probably be happy to have the $20.  That was a most fought after gift one year in my family.
