method for chopping jalapenos?

DH and I are making homemade salsa as a holiday gift. We have the hardest time chopping jalapenos, though. I get one whiff of them (when cut open) and have a coughing fit and can't breathe. It's making this process take a long time. Do you have a method for chopping them that helps you not feel like you are choking to death? TIA!

p.s. DH actually said last night "What I wouldn't do for a Slap Chop right now...." Ha ha.

Re: method for chopping jalapenos?

  • How about placing a large piece of bread in your mouth?  That's what I do for onions and it works pretty well.

  • Hmmmm....Are you going to stick all the ingridients in a food processor?  If so, then I'd just throw them in there whole with everything else.

If not maybe you could chop the peppers with something like this.

  • Hmmm... I guess they don't bother me as much as you.  I just have to be sure to take my contacts out before I cut into any pepper because that stuff stays on your hands then if I touch my eye area any time after that... ouch!  I would say to use gloves for sure.  Maybe tie a scarf or something around your mouth/nose area so you don't breathe it in.  Are they cold or room-temp?  I think someone told me that cold onions aren't as potent as room-temp ones so maybe the same thing will work for peppers?

  • They really bother my throat and eyes when chopping. I bought some of those small masks like they use at the nail salons. They help me!! :)
  • i'm not that sensitive but i typically refrigerate ours before i chop them and they seem to not be as irritating then... maybe its in my head though?
  • My parents grow jalepenos, and I just asked them - he says he's also heard of and tried putting them in the fridge before cutting them and as far as they can tell, it does help.
  • Light a match, blow it out & stick it in between your lips (hot side out!)...just dangling like a cigarette.  It's what we used to do when chopping onions in a restaurant...it kept us from crying...

LOL!  i learned that the hard way, too.  chopped up some jalapenos, went to take my contacts out later that evening and AAAAGGGGHHHH!!!  now, i either make dh do it or wear gloves.  no way i'll make that mistake again!

  • During an HEB run, I caved and bought a Slap Chop (Merry Christmas, DH!). It works pretty well and definitely helped contain the fumes.

smart move. i was going to say, you might just be out of luck. i am super sensitive to jalapenos (maybe even allergic?). when i was in high school i was a server at a mexican restaurant and on a slow day they asked me to chop jalapenos. i wore TWO pairs of gloves, and my hands started burning. they didn't believe me (the two pairs of gloves went up to my elbows), but then my hands turned bright red. i guess that crazy jalapeno juice somehow soaked through two layers of plastic?? i soaked them in cold water and then flour, but man, that was unbelievably painful. haven't touched fresh jalapenos since.   two thumbs up for any device that will chop them for you!

  • You're gonna love my nuts!

     I'm sorry, I couldn't help it.  Embarrassed

Could it be that you were allergic to the gloves (possibly latex)?

nope, never happened any other time i wore them (before or since). maybe the gloves combined with the jalapenos? dunno...
