Anyone ever worked with fondant?

I want to do something really easy, just covera a cake nothing outrageous. Can I learn how to do this on my own and easily? FWIW I'm thinking of making my mom's birthday cake and making it look like a piece of Dove Dark Chocolate since those are her favorites.

Re: Anyone ever worked with fondant?

  • I haven't personally, but I have a friend who has. She just started playing around with it for cakes and has gotten really good with it. The first cakes she did with it looked fantastic even though she'd only fooled with it a time or two. She said it's very easy once you get the hang of how to handle it.
  • I know Joeysgirl has!
  • You can totally do this! It's like working with play-doh. There are tons of great You Tube videos out there with demos if you are visual, like me. If you need help too, feel free to PM or email me!
  • I have and it was pretty easy to work with. A friend of mine and I made her brother's wedding cake this summer so if I can do that I'm sure you can pull off a birthday cake! I actually made my own mashmallow fondant b/c I don't like the taste of the store bought kind. Like joeysgirl said they have lots of You Tube videos that show how to make the fondant, cover cakes, and make basic decorations.

  • I have too! There's an even easier recipe that marshmallow fondant, if you don't like the marshamallow taste.

Fondant is alot easier than buttercream. You can even make chocolate fondant so the work is almost done!

I have an awesome chocolate cake recipe too if you're looking for one. All my folks request it.

Let me know if you have questions, I can help out.

    Good luck!
