  • Sounds lame, but gift certificates, or stocks (you can buy stocks for Disney or other child-friendly companies that frame it).

  • My friend's daughter is 18 months...ish.  This is what we sent her for Christmas.  She LOVES animals.

  • My husband's godparents got him an ornament every Christmas.  The ornament would usually coincide with an interest he had that year (Chicago Cubs, trains, etc) along with the year.  It's really nice to pull them out every year to put them on the tree.

  • I agree with the pp about an ornaments. Or you could start him a Disney movie collection and buy him a Disney Classic every year.

I've got more issues than a magazine
  •  A years family admission to a local Children's Museum or science center.

    educational books...

  • Start a good library for him!  There is a new illustrated edition of Treasure Island out this year, for example.  You could give him a book he'll enjoy now and one he'll enjoy later.

  • If he's a godchild could you do something religiously based?  What about getting a Veggie Tales DVD and you could get a new one each year as a "tradition?"  I think even a 18 month old could appreciate them, we got 2 for my 7 month old so he can have them to watch all next year.

I also love the idea of starting him a library, you could get all the children's classic literature and they could get more complicated as he gets older!

  • We started a lego tradition with our nephew when he was about that age.  Every birthday and Christmas we get him some kind of legos.  At lego.com you can sort their items by age so it's an easy way to get something age appropriate.  We also figured it's one of those toys that the more you have of them, the better.  And since legos aren't cheap we figured we'd start building him a set over time.  He's really into cars so we go with that and find lego tanker trucks, car repair stations, sets with cars etc.  He really likes it.
  • I love the library idea. We started this with my nephew. But as he got older, he didn't care to read and his mother would just give the books away. Confused

I discovered it when I didn't see any of the books we gave him. Fortunately, we hadn't spent a lot of money on any special or first editions.

Maybe my SIL is a rare and unique individual and most people would know to keep the books for their kids? Confused

I really, really like the suggestion for a year's admission to a Children's Museum or a science education center.
