Commutes

How long is your commute to/from work (at the normal time you go!)  What about DP?  Do you work different hours to have a shorter commute?  Where do you live?  Did you chose your home based on commuting factors? If you are now a SAHM, what was it before you had the best commute ever?Smile

Reason I ask - I am OVER our commutes.  I know that DC has bad traffic - but I am wondering if it is really worth it to move out of the area b/c of the traffic.

Re: Commutes

  • I used to have a terrible commute and HATED it so that was the #1 consideration when we moved into our town.  Now my commute is 10 minutes (so is DW's). its wonderful - my QOL is honestly so much better. I dont think i could ever go back to a long commute again.
  • I hear you on the bad traffic in our area. It's pretty awful. I think overall, DW and I are pretty lucky. My 4 mile commute takes 15 minutes door-to-door. DW travels about 15 miles to work and it takes her about 30 minutes. The only issue is that 5 of those miles are spent on the beltway, which you know is the highway from hell. To deal, she's adjusted her schedule to arrive and depart work earlier than the average commuter. We've been at our jobs for awhile, so when we bought the house, commute time was high on our list of considerations.

  • My current commute is my longest ever and it's about 20-30 minutes.  If I leave right at 4:30pm or after about 5:20 than I can get home in about 15-20.  But anywhere near the 5pm hour and it takes me 30minutes.

My commute isn't due to traffic though.  The drive is only 10 miles but there is NO good way to get here.  The office is in the middle of a nature preserve with no easy freeway access.

K's commute is 5-7 minutes + 7minutes walking from the parking garage to the office.

  • My commute used to be pretty easy, around 10 minutes in the morning but up to 20 at night. CA traffic is awful, I worked 3.5 miles from our old house and that is how long is took. S drives all day long as she sees clients in their homes. Her current caseload is fantatsic. She may drive 20+ minutes but there is never any traffic. Her old case load would have her stuck in traffic for 2-3 hours some nights. It was so stressful. Long commutes make life a lot harder, imho.
  • Thanks.  Right now my commute is an hour each way (tack on school drop off/pick up and it is 75-90 minutes.) L's is about an 60-90 minutes (and more when she does pick up (she can't do drop off b/c of the timing) and that is ONLY because she leaves home at 6am.  Problem is that we work in two entirely different places (me in the city and her way out in the burbs.)  We'll need to move at some point b/c of schools - but we have no idea where. We both really like our jobs and there is no middle ground in an area where we can afford (and it puts us back in VA - where we moved from b/c of their unfriendly laws.)  Part of me just wonders if we should just pull up stakes and move out of this area all together.  Problem is where - we aren't interested in moving to where either set of parents live (deep south) and really don't have ties to anywhere else that we are interested in living (we have a lot of friends in FL but do not want to move there.) Plus the whole job thing....

  • My commute is great.  I live 1.5 mi from school.  It takes about 5 min.  S's commute was a little longer when she was working about 15 min but still in the same town.

This is the first time I have ever had a short commute.  I lived in a part of Boston for a while that is a pain to get to and worked north of the city.  It took me about 45 min in the morning (as I would leave at about 5:45-6:25 am) but as much as 2.5 hrs in the afternoon.  My choice was to either drive through the neighborhoods of Boston to get home and by Fenway park which was hell in the summer or through the BIG DIG!!!!  It sucked and I went through 2 sets of breaks in the 3 years I had that commute.  My next commute was about 45 min to 1 hr but it also sucked because I had to go through a high traffic area.  I don't know how I will ever go back to a sucky commute my quality of life is so much better.

  • I'm 75 min door to door - 50 min on a train, 10 min in car, 5 min or so waiting, and the rest on foot.

C's commute is about 90 minutes in the morning, more like 2-2.5 hours in the evening to our house. She stays at my parents house a few nights a week which is 25 min from her office.

Where I get a new job will determine where we move. If I apply for/get the job I just saw posted, it'll be an hour for both of us if we live centrally. Not ideal but better than now I guess.

  • We leave the house at about 7:15/7:30 for me to make to work for 8:00.  We live just west of Boston proper, with me working downtown, and C working south of the city in the burbs.  C drops me off downtown when she passes through the city on her way to the office.  Once I get out of the car, I have a mile walk.  And then C continues her drive south.  So it takes her about an hour, and me about 40 minutes to get to work.

Getting home is another story.  I walk about a mile to a bus that takes me home. Door to door, it's about an hour.  For C, it takes every bit of an hour, sometimes more, depending on traffic.

I feel like our commutes are really typical for the Boston area.  I don't like it, but I don't feel like we couldn't do much better! Mileage wise, we live very close to downtown, where my office is - it's just that there's no quick way to get there (unless I drove and paid $$$$$ to park each month).

  • my commute to work= 10/15 min., my commute to school= 5/10 min., K's commute to work= 20 min. Yes, the commute was a major factor in choosing the location of our home.  I hate wasting time traveling when you could be with your family.  At the same time... moving is a PITA.  How long is your commute?

  • I'm new here (I've been lurking for a bit, but found this to be a relevant discussion for my first post). My commute to my actual office is a flat 30 minutes. I'm an auditor, though, so I am rarely commuting to my real office. Commutes to clients are anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours, I'd say the average is an hour. Certain ones are 30 miles = 1.5 hours due to a certain highway. DP's commute is a 2 block walk from our house.

We actually chose to live in the city based on personal preference. My commute was not a primary factor in our decision. DP was a homemaker for the first year after we relocated 1.5 years ago, so we didn't have her commute to consider. We are considering moving next year, and we're looking in certain areas based on the following factors: relationship recognition, commutes, affordability, diversity, and schools.

  • DP is in seminary and we live in seminary housing so her commute is non-existant for now. She will be placed in an internship for her third year (starting in April) and that will jump to anywhere from two blocks away to a two hour drive depending on the site and we won't know until placement. My commute is 45 minutes in the morning, about an hour at night, door to door. But that is on public transportation, so two trains and a bus from the Southside of Chicago to the financial district. If I am lucky enough to snag a ride to work its about 20 minutes with traffic.

It would actually be faster for me to get to work if we lived in the burbs because I could take the fancy commuter train in instead of the "El" trains, which would be one train direct into Union Station downtown... but for now we get a great deal on student apartments, so we are staying in our inexpensive apt for now.

Woops, I could've read the responses before posting!  I can NOT imagine a commute over an hour!  I think I would cry on a daily basis.  It doesn't sound like you have a whole lot of options though...  Win the lottery?

  • Our current home (of 5months) is the only place we've ever moved to w/o considering the commute. It's an experiment, and so far a failed one. We love our neighborhood (Takoma Park) but DW's commute to VA is truly terrible. It's 45-60 minutes of honking screaming road enraged craziness. My commute is 30 minutes on public transportation, 45 if I walk to the metro instead of taking the bus.

When we were looking at houses, we made the mistake of renting in August, when apparently everyone was on vacation. DW's commute was only 20 minutes then.

Like you, we're feeling similarly stuck, as options in between our offices ( icky Virginia, and the insanely expensive neighborhood near my work--Capitol Hill), aren't doable and the commute from East of the Anacostia River isn't actually much better. We really want to buy a house  so I think we're reaching a breaking point where we'll either have to decide to spend more than we can afford or we'll have to leave DC.  Sadly, the process of looking at other places has made us realize how much we love the District and don't feel as connected to our other options.

I hear Milwaukee is cheapo and commuter-friendly.  :)

  • I live on Capitol Hill and work at L'Enfant Plaza (for DC types), so my commute is about 20-25 minutes: walk to train, wait for train, 7 minutes on the train, then a short walk to work. Jen's is about 30 minutes because she has to switch lines but her work is right at the Metro exit.

Honestly, we would never consider settling down here permanently because the traffic is absurd. It wears down the spirit just looking at it, let alone sitting in it every day. Jen has a coworker who lives south of DC in a cute little town on the Chesapeake Bay and her commute isn't bad going directly from there to downtown. She's the only one I know who lives outside of DC and has a decent commute in.
