It's worse.

I hate my house.

The diapers are there to compare colours of purple. The paint colour is supposed to be a grayish tan. This is after three coats. So much money and time wasted... to make it worse now I'm afraid to re-paint in case this is just going to keep happening.

  • That almost looks like the colour we landed with in the nursery (which I was planning to post about in a few minutes!)... that's for sure not grey/tan. I have no solutions for you, only sympathy!
  • I don't understand it. If you look at the chemical/tint make up of the paint, there isn't even any blue in it. It's red and yellow and white and brown. So why the purple tint?

  • are the lights fluorescent (or compact fluorescent?) maybe replacing the light bulbs could help? that sucks. I know what you mean about painting taking a long time. It took 5 coats to paint our lounge and it still doesn't look very good and we consider it temporary because we painted fake wood panelling. sorry you took my advice to paint another coat. Does the chip at least match the wall now, or still doesn't?? what finish do you have (flat, eggshelf, satin, semi gloss??)
  • you could try posting on D&R to see if they have any ideas. That board is pretty nice but it's busier in the day time if you want to wait until tomorrow.

Definitely try the D&R board. They even have a paint bio where people have posted pictures of different paint, so you could always find something there that might help. There are still quite a few girls on there in the PM, so it might be worth a shot asking.

  • We do have CFL bulbs. I switched out the bulbs with two different types of incandescent bulbs we still have lying around in our junk drawer (Reveal bulbs and regular soft white bulbs) and although the colour changed a bit between bulbs, it's still purple. It's an eggshell finish. It doesn't exactly match the chip but it's closer than I would have ever guessed, considering the chip doesn't look purple at all. I cannot figure out how the paint and the chip look so similar while looking so un-alike.

Grr. Right now I'm leaning towards leaving it, at least for now. It's just the upstairs hallway so it doesn't matter that much if it's not what I wanted. I had planned on painting the living room the same colour (and I have another jug of paint to do that with) and I'm so glad I started upstairs instead of downstairs. I couldn't leave the living room purple, if I had started downstairs. I think I'll go beg for a bunch of small cans of tester colours and paint a few colour swatches on the downstairs living room walls and then determine what colour I'm going to use.

Maybe I'll offer to paint my younger sister's boring white bedroom as part of her Christmas present and make use of the jug of paint I'm not going to use otherwise. Although I'm going to freak out if the colour looks right in her room.

  • What a bummer!  That totally sucks!  Very very frustrating.  I hate painting to start with - so if it didn't come out the right colour, I'd be so angry.

Our main bath was supposed to be this pumpkin colour, but it came out more dark peach.  I was pissed, but too lazy to redo it!

  • How frustrating! I definitely recommend picking up tester pots and trying as many colours as you want until you find something that works - make sure you try them on all walls and look at them at different types of day before you decide. I definitely sympathize - my mom and I repainted her guest room when they moved in and it was an awful mint green on the walls - when we repainted this spring we ended up buying six tester pots before we decided on a colour.
  • Oh man...that is definitely frustrating. Painting can be an absolute nightmare sometimes. I definitely sympathize. It's bad enough to have to paint 2 coats, but then seeing that you may need to re-do it again is just torture. I wonder why there was such a difference in colour compared to the chip. I'm terrified this is going to happen when we paint our bedroom.
