I saw below you said you are taking probiotics and grapefruit seed extract to help you pass the GBS test. Is the grapefruit seed extract supposed to help kill off the bacteria in GBS? Just curious...we almost lost DS to GBS when he was 6 weeks old (although he oddly enough did not get it from me, but "from the community") so I'm always interested in learning more.
Re: **MauiWedding**
You are the second person I know (other person is IRL) that has had a baby get GBS from the community. How scary! So sorry you had to go through that!
Grapefruit seed extract is supposed to be anti-bacterial/viral/fungal, but like any natural remedies, the studies that have been done are so small that it's really hard to say one way or another.
However, there are clear examples of it working. My MWs recommend it to anyone that asks for more natural remedies or seem interested in preventative treatment. They really seem to think it helps and had some stats - they have a really, really low GBS+ number (almost non-existent) in their practice when the pregnant women takes the 2 in conjunction. The downside is that many in their practice can't afford the supplements, or don't want to go buy them (about $25/month for the probiotics and the bottle of GSE was $14, I have to buy the probiotics online or purchase in Seattle - worth it to me). I really like preventative treatments, especially for something like this - it seems like the antibiotic treatment is only marginally effective when you look at all the studies of GBS+ babies (obviously worth it, but still not a sure way to treat).
For the GSE I have a small bottle with a built in dropper. For prevention purposes they only recommended 5 drops/day and I mix it with orange juice.
I have seen GSE come up for other uses - ex: to help treat thrush and also as a treatment for yeast infected cloth diapers.
Coupled with the probiotics I'm just trying to create a healthy vaginal "flora" (that phrase made me want to giggle...). In addition, it's possible to test negative and then still develop some type of infection prior to birth, so I will continue that regime until I go into labor.
Was your friend's baby ok? Marino's GBS turned into sepsis and bacterial meningitis and he needed 14 days in the PICU, but he's fine now.
Thanks for sharing this information. I had c.diff for 5.5 months straight last year and ever since, I am a huge proponent of probiotics! Both Marino and I take one daily. I hadn't heard of GSE, I think I might add that into my supplements...I need all the help I can get to ward off bad bacteria!!
Yes, my friend's baby is ok now, but it was very scary at the time. I think his case was considered late onset even though he had minor respiratory problems soon after being taken home from the hospital. It did enter his bloodstream, and I'm not sure how they classified it after that, but he was in the hospital for at least 2 weeks.
My family is big on probiotics too because we all have horrible reactions to antibiotics (not allergic in the typical sense, but we has pretty much figure some sort of issue will come up if we have to go on a course of them - like a horrible, won't go away for anything, yeast or digestive track infection)
