Traveling with kids question
DH and I are going to go to Minnesota/WI next November. My grandpa can't really travel anymore, but I do want him to meet his great-grandson plus I have several aunts, uncles, and cousins I haven't seen in years. We're also going to go to DH's mom and stepdad's house to see those people as well.
Anyways, would you recommend buying a seat on the flight for the baby? He'll be 6 months by the time we go. I will have to pay but it's about $150 for him. Otherwise, he'll sit on my lap. I'm thinking that it will be crowded and I'd rather have the space and we can keep him in the carseat. It'll be a 3 hour flight.
Or do you think I can ship him? I could package him up overnight and pick him up when we get there.

you travel a lot. maybe you should invest in a car seat that is also FAA regulated. i don't know about buying a seat, because i never recommended it. however, i have never traveled with a baby to know how safe i felt with a lap child.
i have always told people to bring the carseat to the gate, because the F.A.s will let you bring the seat on if there's an empty seat. ALSO, this lets you have the carseat as soon as you get off the flight (normally).
I've noticed that very early flights always have empty seats, so this might be an idea to think about.
3 hours is long, but not supper long for him to divide time between your lap and your husbands.

my SIL flew from MI to Philly with nephew on her lap when he was older than 6mos - it's only about 2 hours, but she did ok.
If you feel crowded on the plane, just get Blobby to start crying - nobody will crowd you then.
Granted, I traveled w/DD at a much younger age, but in all flight instances, she was just my lap child. We checked the carseat when went to AZ. Because she was so young, I BF her as we went up and came down. Helped keep her ears from being wonky.
I highly recommend a baby front carrier thing though. That thing is priceless b/c you normally need 2 hands when you're managing boarding passes, carry ons, diaper bags, etc.
And a Balboa Baby hooter hider cover if you're BFing - it is much larger than others and is sewn to wrap like a shell around the baby.
Funny, two couples we know were talking about current and past traveling experiences. Older couple reminisced about a flight to the Azores with a then 2 year old son. "Oh sure, he was free because we didn't buy a seat," said the dad, "but we still paid for it."
Young couple told us of the nightmare 6 hour drive to San Diego with a screaming 1.5 y.o. and a 5 month old.
I was seated once next to a woman traveling with a baby. She refused to believe that I was actually in the right seat because she told me that her baby had to have a seat. She didn't understand the "if we have room" thing. It was a full flight. She demanded to see my boarding pass and called a flight attendant. That was back before I was bitter about such things or else I would have explained to her that even though her friends and family might be shelling baby gift out the wazoo to her, the airline didn't have any interest in giving her extra freebies for her f*ck trophy.
So I say don't buy a ticket, but don't yell at the poor person who happens to get seated in your baby's seat.
I just a friendly gal looking for options.
I guess I'm in the minority here, but I just don't see how it's safe to have a baby on your lap instead of in a seat. I wouldn't ride with a baby on my lap in a car - I certainly wouldn't do so in a plane. (I also can't wear a front carrier, and there's honestly not that much room between me and the seat in front of me. I can't imagine where a baby would fit.)
We went to WI for a wedding when Bacon was almost 6 mos. We bought a seat. She slept the whole flight.
