Acupuncture ?'s

Hey ladies,

I know a few of you have gone for acupuncture, how was your experience?  There is a clinic across the street from my office, talk about convenient, and I went for my first massage therapist apt. yesterday and it was heaven!  They also do acupuncture and I'm thinking about going for it after we return from Hawaii - I have a constant sore back from sitting at a desk all day and we are also TTC.  TIA Smile

  • One more question, can you feel it? Or more precisely is it painful? I have heard that it isn't but... just wanted to ask :)

  • it's not painful at all...it feels more like a tap on your skin.  if you have some problem areas, it might hurt a little. my tender spots tend to be on the inside of my ankles and knees...my nd told be these were metabolism points and my thyroid is extremely sluggish so it makes sense.

i get them in my head/face sometimes and i never feel them...i usually crash out for about 30 minutes...hardest sleep i've ever had :)

  • I went to acupuncture for the first time for a wicked sore back injury in Nov.  I could barely sit at my desk, so I was kneeling.  I had 5 treatments, but afterwards I felt great.  It could have been the time passing and I healed naturally (about 3 weeks), but I really feel that the acupuncture worked.  The only pain I felt was the initial zing! of the needle going in.  In my sore spots the zing was a little more pronounced.  She also did cupping on me, which felt like big suction cups on my back - the only downside was I had a very bruised back - good thing it wasn't summer!  ;)  I say give it a try and see if it works for you.
  • cupping is AWESOME!!!  totally worth the round hickeys as i like to call them :)

  • acunpuncture was the only thing that would help my mom's dry eye

oh and i might have missed it, but i didn't know you were TTC! good luck! :) and great job on the weight loss too!

  • I've never been, but YAY Tara!!!  Liking the ticker! :)  I actually have been looking into it myself to try and help me with my new found anxiety issues.  I'm on the fence, but certainly something I would love to try :)

Thanks Lindsay Smile  If I go I will let you know how it goes, it's also nice because my medical covers 80% of the cost, up to $500/year, which is so nice.

  • I really love it.  I think it's important to find a good practitioner that you click with and really trust.

I don't think it hurts, but like PP have said there are points that are sometimes really sensitive, so when the needle went in it would kind of send a shooting feeling (I wouldn't even call it a pain, just a very noticeable feeling) up the rest of my leg/arm/foot and those varied from week to week for me.

I went for help with hormones but I could see positive differences in many other areas.  I was less fatigued and slept better.  I wish I was still going as frequently, but I honestly don't have any health or wellness concerns at this point and all my OB appts. mess up my schedule enough as it is.

I went to a naturopathic doctor for my treatments because I liked that she had the ability to prescribe medicine as needed and had a greater understanding of the medical side of my issues - this was great because she ordered lots of bloodwork to help figure out why I might not be ovulating in conjunction with the TCM way of reading my tongue for Qi energies.

On the other hand, my sister sees a great licensed acupuncturist for anxiety/depression/insomnia and really only needs the basic acupuncture care (no natural medicine treatment and she is not interested in herbs b/c she only has success (so far) with prescription drugs) so it all just depends on who you click with and what you need.

  • This is great info!  I've been curious about accupunture too.....I need to make time for it.  And, good info on the insurance Tara!  I never even thought to see if ours covered it!

Great advice, thank you.  The office across the street is a naturopathic clinic and that appeals to me as well.

  • good point on the insurance!

I don't need a referral and mine is covered at 26 sessions a year (I guess every 2 weeks is how they get that figure), but many of my appointments did not come out of that allotment because they were coded as an office visit because I was being seen by a doctor to discuss my medical care/blood results, etc.  I guess that is probably at the discretion of the doctor, medical biller, and insurance but it worked out great for me.

Although it was totally annoying b/c I had to pay my co-pay for those visits, but not for an acupuncture only visit!!  But worth it because I thought I might quickly run through the 26 at the rate I was going at the beginning of this year.

  • I did acupuncture once with a sports medicine dr who specialized in acupuncture and it worked miracles. I wish I could've seen him again when my butt was in so much pain last week but my current insurance doesn't cover it =(

But back when it did, I went to see the acupuncture/sports med dr when I threw out my knee after competing in 6 events at a swim meet. I was actually a little hesitant to see an acupuncturist, but since the guy specialized also as a sports medicine dr, I decided to give it a shot. Plus, my friend highly recommended him. I couldn't walk without assistance when I went to see him and after I think even just one session, it did the trick and my knee was good as new. It didn't hurt at all. Before I did laser hair removal, they said that laser hair feels like needles pricking you or rubber band snapping at you, and all I can say is that laser hair removal is A LOT more painful than acupuncture. I don't even remember feeling anything when I got it done.

Hope it works out for you too, and lots of TTC vibes your way!!

  • I haven't done acupuncture but my chiro doc does acupuncture and they do massage therapy too. I have gotten adjustments and "free" massages since my insurance covers them :-).

My friend's husband has really bad migraine. He tried acupuncture and he swears that his migraine has gotten much much better.

Hooray on the weight lost!! Goodluck on TTCing. Are you charting? We're officially TTCing next year :-).
