Rec your laptop (that is NOT a Mac)
Mac is not an option. But - please rec your laptop. Mine is hanging on by a thread and I need to start shopping around now. I don't really want to spend more than 1K. All I've ever had is HP/Compaq and I have no experience with anything else.
TIA!

This, exactly. We had a HP that I really liked, I had a Compaq that I loved, and DH now has a Gateway that he really likes. So any of those brands we would buy again.

+1 for the HP laptop love from me.
If you do decide to go the dell route, a friend of mine has a netbook and loves it.

I love my Sony
Dh loves his Sony
We are (what we call) "sony snobs" - because I refuse to go any other way with my laptop. I have a Sony Vaio FJ270. I got it in Jan/Feb 2006 and have zero issues. I love it.
Dh has a sony vaio Fs740W. He's installed mounds of programming, and all sorts of random stuff. He got his in 2005, I think -- and has only had one problem with the battery. He was still under warranty and it was fine.

Mine is similar to this from Best Buy- it's an HP dual-core and has really been great. It's comparable to our desktop for sure- same function and use. I would say the only downside is that it has about a 2.5 hr battery life bc we didn't upgrade, which we probably should have for the size.
My old next door neighbor works for Microsoft and doesn't recommend purchasing a Dell. The last desktop we got from them had to be replaced after a year.
