Rec your laptop (that is NOT a Mac)

Mac is not an option.  But - please rec your laptop.  Mine is hanging on by a thread and I need to start shopping around now.  I don't really want to spend more than 1K.  All I've ever had is HP/Compaq and I have no experience with anything else.

TIA!

Re: Rec your laptop (that is NOT a Mac)

  • I won't be too terribly much help because mine is an HP. I have a dv2700 entertainment series HP laptop I got almost 2 years ago and it still runs great. I've never had any problems with it (other than it couldn't run Sims like the salesguy promised me it could).  Compared to the Dell I had, it's a dream! I bought a Dell in August 2004. By June, I got the BSOD almost daily. It reset itself to factory settings every time it restarted (try saving docs on that!). They had to change out the memory, hard drive and finally mother board (thank God I bought the 3 year warranty), and then less than a year later, it needed yet another motherboard. Huge PITA. I will never buy another Dell. Tons of my classmates had similar problems.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

This, exactly.  We had a HP that I really liked, I had a Compaq that I loved, and DH now has a Gateway that he really likes.  So any of those brands we would buy again.

  • +1 for the HP laptop love from me.

If you do decide to go the dell route, a friend of mine has a netbook and loves it.

  • I love my Sony

    Dh loves his Sony

We are (what we call) "sony snobs" - because I refuse to go any other way with my laptop.  I have a Sony Vaio FJ270.  I got it in Jan/Feb 2006 and have zero issues.  I love it.

Dh has a sony vaio Fs740W.  He's installed mounds of programming, and all sorts of random stuff.  He got his in 2005, I think -- and has only had one problem with the battery.  He was still under warranty and it was fine.

  • We just got a new HP from Best Buy about a month ago and like it so far.  I don't know the model or anything, but I know it has a Pentium processor, a webcam, and came with Windows 7.
  • Mine is similar to this from Best Buy- it's an HP dual-core and has really been great.  It's comparable to our desktop for sure- same function and use.  I would say the only downside is that it has about a 2.5 hr battery life bc we didn't upgrade, which we probably should have for the size.

My old next door neighbor works for Microsoft and doesn't recommend purchasing a Dell.  The last desktop we got from them had to be replaced after a year.

  • I love my Dell Inspiron ...it's pink :)-- with a 15.5 in. screen:)  and I haven't had any problems at all and it performs very well.  I'd recommend buying it directly from Dell, and not from Walmart, Sams, or Best Buy-- so you can get exactly what you want in it and get more than just the standard warranty.  Mine has Vista (I haven't upgraded to Win7 yet), a Core 2 Duo processor (not to be confused with just a Dual Core), 4 gigs of ram, a 250 GB hard drive, upgraded graphics card, webcam, and upgraded (longer life) battery. This is my third Dell, and all of them have worked well.
  • I've got a Dell XPS and love it.  My only recommendation is to NOT get Vista.  It has wreaked havoc and I've had to reimage my system a few times when Microsoft decides to automatically update software while I am sleeping.  From what my friends say, this goes away with Win 7.
