An odd request...

I just got a call from my boss's wife, she was calling in sick for my boss (yes, calling in sick at nearly 11am). Apparently both Bossman and his wife, along with their 18 month old baby all have a nasty stomach bug. Mrs. Bossman called to request that a few addresses that she needs to finish off Christmas cards, she also asked if I can bring some stamps and orange gatorade. Yes, I have to leave work and drive to their house to drop off 7 stamps and orange gatorade.

I love my boss dearly as well as his family, and I'm fully aware that the environment that I work in is slightly personal assistant-ish, and bossman doesn't live far away at all...but really?! You're asking me leave work and drive to your house for 7 stamps and some orange gatorade??

Re: An odd request...

  • Yes, that's weird. If your title was "Boss's ***" it would be understandable. We give the side eye when our boss has our Business Manager run personal errands for him, and the fact you're leaving work for 7 stamps and Gatorade is ridic.

  • The attorney I used to paralegal for used to ask me to pick up his kids after school. Yeah, they knew me because they spent a lot of time at our office, but holy weirdness hanging out at the car lane at their elementary school.

I'm friends with everybody in this office. We're all best friends - I love everybody here. But sometimes your best friends start coming into work late, and start having dentist appointments that aren't dentist appointments. And that's when it is nice to let them know that you can beat them up.
  • SO weird!  Do they seriously not have anyone else (family member or friend) they can call without getting a coworker to do it?  Strangest request ever.  I'd tell her to shove the orange Gatorade up her hoo-ha.
  • Did she ask you to bring stamps from work to her for personal correspondance?  Because I'm super secretive when I steal stamps from work and wouldn't ask a coworker to bring them to me.
  • Well Bossman owns the company and I'm the only full-time employee. They're a very wealthy family and our business manages their assets. He's a very high maintenance kind of guy and I knew the second I interviewed with him that there'd be days where I'm making him dinner reservations and writing personal correspondence for him. I'm pretty easy going with that sort of thing, especially since I'm treated so well here. The stamps are bought out of company funds and he owns the company, so while it's technically stealing, it doesn't really matter too much. Mrs. Bossman sounded desparate. They live in a skyrise downtown and not too close to anything. Bossman is "too sick" to watch the sick baby while sick Mrs. Bossman runs out, so she asked me to help. I feel bad for her because she's not the type to take advantage, but I still think it's really odd to make such a frivolous request! They have a concierge in their building, couldn't he do it?!
  • Well it sounds like she feels desperate, and therefore will really appreciate your help.  Feel good about doing a good deed and go run errands while you're out.

I very regularly steal stamps from work and do not fit any of your criteria for reasons it would be ok.

I ALWAYS use work stamps for my personal mailings. Granted, I dont' have a ton of letters to mail, but when I do I steal stamps. Shh! Smile

  • All of my RSVP envelopes had work stamps. And all my Christmas cards. And DH's bills. It's the least they can do.

  • Jealous! We don't have stamps. We have machines. I'd get fired if I touched it! (only 1 or 2 people in our office are allowed to use it)
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • A few weeks ago, MM posted a story about an employee who was fired for using the work meter machine to stamp all of her wedding invitations.

Us too... that would have saved significantly in the wedding budget.
