SO: Internet Privacy...Advice

Now I'm freaked out, too.  I used that 123people website and found information on my husband but in Connecticut.  It has his whole family's names and his hometown but it says current location is in CT.  Do you think someone has stolen his identity?  What do you guys suggest?  He's at work so I don't want to text it to him and freak him out while he's there.

Ideas?

  • I'm assuming they're not common names?  I found someone with my exact first and last name that has a very similar occupation, just in another city/state (and he's a guy, of course).  There are a few other people with my exact first/lastname also... I guess that's one sort-of good thing about my married name--relative anonymity.  At least, compared to my maiden name.

  • I guess it's fairly common but the weird thing is that when I clicked on it, his entire family's name came up and his middle name was in it AND it said Hometown: XXX, TX (his real hometown.)  It also said his dad was from this town in CT so maybe somewhere along their lives they got a zip code wrong and it just stuck with them.  That's what I'm hoping for...

  • Has he ever lived in CT?  I looked up myself and it had my current address at Round Rock, and I haven't lived there in awhile.

  • So Connecticut is totally random? He's never been there or associated with it? It can't hurt to do a credit check. It doesn't hurt your credit and you can get it free (no score, but at least you can check for fraudulant activity) at:

    www.annualcreditreport.com
(The other pages, like freecreditreport.com and others are not the official sites and out to make money, it's easy to get sucked up into a monthly payment credit watch and not realize it.)

Other web searches aren't always accurate and it could easily be a mistake. The best way to make sure is to check his credit.

    I hope nothing is wrong!

  • I think you're probably fine, but wouldn't hurt to get one of the free credit reports. For one thing, it can't necessarily distinguish with like named people. I have a really rare name, but I know of one other gal with it nearby and she's more public than me (into politics) so her info comes up mostly when you search for me. Also, it retains city information for a long time. If he grew up there and his parents are still there, that alone could explain it.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • I guess I'll just show him when he gets home and see if he's ever even been there.  I don't think he has and I know he's never lived there but maybe there's a relative or something that I've never heard of.  Weird.  We'll probably do a credit check just to be safe.  I feel better that all of you think it's probably nothing.  Wink Leave it to Nesties to calm some nerves.
