Area vets who do free, low-cost, or discounted work for low-income families??

I was talking to a co-worker today who knows someone in a difficult situation. They can't pay their rent and are barely getting by. They have two dogs who need some serious health care (that requires surgery), but they can't afford anything more than their food right now.

Does anyone know a vet who does free, low-cost, or discounted work for families in such difficult situations?

  • I would call the SPCA and ask them for a referral.  There's a place up on Chester Rd (maybe) in Sharonville that does low cost shots & spay/neuter but I don't think they'll do much more than that.  Maybe a vet school but I think the closest one is Ohio State.

  • I've been to the clinic in Sharonville for shots for my dog.  They weren't THAT discounted, but they were less expensive.  It would probably  not be a good place for an ill dog--it was mostly for dogs that need shots and basic care.  They also do minor surgeries like speuters.
  • I would also check a vet that deals more with bigger animals such as cows and stuff. We found a vet who is up in Mechanicsburg (by Columbus) and he only charged us for his supplies. If a shot cost him $10 then we paid $10. I bet even if you called a vet and explain the situation they might know of someone or something that could be done.
  • I recommend checking out these groups that help individuals pay for veterinary care, maybe one of them can help?

  • Sorry about the junk text in my message...I can't seem to edit it out! That's what I get for copying/pasting from a Word doc (-=

  • I would think most vets offer an option of "Care Credit." They can set the person up on a payment plan (not sure if interest free or not) to pay off the vet bills.

I know my vet would much rather see a dog get the appropriate care, then worry about being paid in full each time. I've had issues with my husky mix, he had an infected hot spot one time. He shaved the area, scrubbed it and only charged me for one bottle of antibiotics.
