Wii owners/users-come in!

Since having Kai, exercising has been the furthest thing from my mind.  Needless to say that this momma has packed on the lbs. like a bear that hibernates. lol  So I have heard some friends talk about the Wii and the fitness thing.  I do have a gym membership, but Kai hates going to the daycare and it is a good excuse not to go. lol

So I asked DH to buy me a Wii for Xmas.  Which he did because I told him where to buy it.  He and I went yesterday to Best Buy and I finally was able to look and see and play with a Wii. It was just for a few minutes, BUT I hated it!  It felt so lame to play a sport against a computer. DH says I sounded old.  Well duh, I will be 35 soon going on 65! So I told him I will probably be taking it back.  Seems like something that I would rather play Mario Brothers on than workout. And $200 is a alot for just that.

So my question for you Wii owners is:

1) How long have you seriously played with it? Just a few weeks and then it just sits?

2) Will it "grow" on me?

3) If you do the Wii fit plus, have you actually lost weight/toned up?

Any other advice.  I am so desperate to loose some lbs before I get PG again. Any other fitness thing you like/love?  I have done WW, but I am not in the frame of mind to do that now.  I was thinking that some exercise may spark the eating better part. lol

  • 1) How long have you seriously played with it? Just a few weeks and then it just sits?  We got it last Christmas.  Mostly for me, but thought the kids would like it.  We played with it a lot for the first month then it sat....until I got the Balance Board and Wii Fit and the interest among everyone (Todd included) was sparked again.  I hve to admit to not using it in months.  I like the fitness stuff, but it's more fun to do with others.  I would like to get the EA Sports Active for it though - I've heard good things about it and with the cold weather preventing me from walking at times it might be good.

    2) Will it "grow" on me?  I hope so!  I loved it from the beginning, but the Wii Fit is my fave.  Everyone in our house is fiercly competitive and we like to one-up each other.

    3) If you do the Wii fit plus, have you actually lost weight/toned up? Nope.  But honestly, anything that gets you moving and your heart rate up is a good thing.

  • 1) How long have you seriously played with it? Just a few weeks and then it just sits?

I used it seriously for about three months after getting it last Christmas.  I do still use it in occasional spurts.

    2) Will it "grow" on me?

I think it might!  Give it some time to find what activities you really like.  I like using the Fit, and I really like the boxing.  I'll do it 2-3 time in a row and it does get my heart rate up and also is a good stress-reliever for me!

    3) If you do the Wii fit plus, have you actually lost weight/toned up?

I did lose about 10 pounds back when I was doing it seriously, but I was also on WW at the same time.  I lose more weight with diet, rather than exercise, personally.  But, I do feel like keeping active, in any form, does help control my appetite and make me want to make better food choices.  I would do about 30 minutes of Wii Fit (I don't have the Plus yet) activities each day as soon as I got home from work, and I had better energy and ate more wisely at dinner.

  • 1) How long have you seriously played with it? Just a few weeks and then it just sits? We got a couple of years ago when it first came out. It's fun and we play it in spurts. So I have to say, sometimes it just sits there. Ultimately, its just a video game.

    2) Will it "grow" on me? Hopefully...there are a lot of fun games out there...if you're talking in terms of wii fit (i don't have the plus either), its definitely fun in the beginning. After a while, I stopped playing it. Maybe out of boredom? But it is sorta nice, records your weight everyday and yeah, like pp said...anything to keep your HR up is good.

    3) If you do the Wii fit plus, have you actually lost weight/toned up? I did NOT see any results. For about a month or two, I did the wii fit when I couldn't make it in to the gym. Don't get me wrong, depending on how hard you work, you could break a sweat. But I always felt like I could be doing more...

Any other advice. That's tough. I'm actually trying to lose about 10 lbs before heading back to Hawaii. Just joined WW. I suppose just watching what you eat and working out. Have you looked into p90x or 30DS? Those are some other good videos you can do at home. 30DS is a bit more lower key than p90x tho. Check the H&F board for info.

  • thanks ladies!  I took it back today. lol I thought good and hard about it and knew it just wouldnt cut it. I had DH buy me some dumbells and I plan on doing the 30DS which is on Comcast on Demand :) Otherwise, Fatty Patty will be heading to the gym! :)

Off to find me another Xmas present.....a camera!

  • Honestly, the only exercise I am able to commit to long term is walking.  And it works...if I walk daily at a 2.5-3.5 miles pace for at least 30 minutes (better if it's 45-60 minutes) and watch what I am eating I lose weight.  (For me weight loss is about 80% food and 20% exercise...that said, when you're watching what you eat, exercise helps boost your energy and feel-good hormones which helps me step away from the chocolate on a stressful day, etc.)  Muscle also burns more calories than fat, so for weightloss, the more muscle you can build the more calories you'll burn.

When we moved to Tulsa we got a NordicTrack3000 treadmill (it has a TV on the console that is cable ready)...between it and just walking my neighborhood (taking the dogs) or a nearby park that is 3 miles around, I get enough variety but never have an excuse not to do it (besides being lazy or not making the time).

I plan to walk for two episodes on HGTV or E!News and Daily 10, etc. and I know that an hour will have gone by and I will have done my exercise for the day.  When I am really into fitness I'll add in work on the exercise ball with resistance bands, weighted balls, etc.

Once the baby comes I hope to continue my treadmill routine (maybe while she naps?) and also get her in the stroller and out in the fresh air (we got a used jog stroller for $30).  Ideally I'd like to drop 80-100 lbs before my next pregnancy (we're planning to TTC #2 in the Fall of 2011).  So I'll have my work cut-out for me.  This GD has scared me and I want to get healthy so I can be around for my kids and hubby for a good, long time!  My goal is to be more fit and healthy in my 40's than I was in my 20's!

Walking most days and meal planning makes a HUGH difference.  You can do it!  start with a commitment to do do 30 minutes/3-4 times a week and increase it from there.  GL!

  • 1) How long have you seriously played with it? Just a few weeks and then it just sits?
Hmm, my situation is a little different because when we first got the Wii, I wasn't working so we played it almost 3-4 hrs everyday for 6 months. Then, my break was over and we moved and got jobs. So it was more like 1hr on most days except for some weekend days where we played all day. Also, MH and I are computer ppl and we love video games. But then we got pg and I was bedridden and we didn't play at all for 2 months. But when I felt better, one of the first things we did was play Rock Band for 2 hours, until I got nauseous and had to rest. So I wouldn't say that it just sits now. It only sat there when I was physically incapable of playing.

    2) Will it "grow" on me?
I hope so! For me, I first played the Wii when it just came out and after a long time of enjoying other ppl's Wii, I got mine last year and by then, I already knew that I would play it a lot and I knew all the games that I loved to play. I definitely took me a while before I was sure that I wanted one of my own.

    3) If you do the Wii fit plus, have you actually lost weight/toned up?
I don't own Wii fit. I just play all the other games, some of which gives you quite an arm workout and is fun to play at the same time, like Rock Band or Raving Rabbids. If you want a leg/aerobic workout from a video game, I love DDR for that. MH and I lost weight on that for sure, but we also love the game so much that it doesn't feel like a workout, but we play that on the PlayStation. I dunno if they have one for the Wii or not.

    Any other advice.
I don't know if you specifically wanted something where you could just workout with at home or something that could double as a game console and/or more? If you just want to workout at home, maybe workout videos or a home workout machine can give you what you're looking for. But if you want a game console that can also give you a good workout, maybe you'd want to return the Wii and get a PlayStation instead? IMO, DDR is the game that gets you the best workout, once you're able do to the advanced/expert levels. No game (or exercise/sport even) makes me sweat as much as that. Plus, the PS3 doubles as a BluRay player too. I like the Wii mainly for the gaming factor and it has a lot of family friendly games that you can play with multiple ppl, so I though it would also be something we can play as a family while the kids are growing up. So I think it really depends on what you're looking for. GL!!

  • haven't used the wii but can sound off about exercise and weight loss.  being a hyperactive person living in los angeles land of cutting edge fitness i have belonged to gyms, yoga studios, private yoga, spin classes trainers, etc....and frankly when i am not surfing i find that walk/jogging is the best for cardio-it is free and easy well with the exception of running shoes.  I will generally do anywhere between 4 and 6 miles some fast walking and some jogging.  It is also important to do some weight bearing exercises and honestly you can get some simple equipment for the house at very little cost, an exercise or bosu ball, some therabands and some free weights even if you commit to 3 x a week this should help you can do bicep curls tricep dips push ups, weighted leg lifts squats and lunges-that and diet modification should help.  Like the pps the px90 video system is great and shape magazine has great exercises and tips.  I still do yoga but no more trainers for me.  Hope that helps and is not too rambly
