Sewing help, please!

Meet my prom dress (and my brother):

image

I need a formal dress for our cruise and I tried this on today. I would absolutely love it if it were cocktail length.  I took it to a tailor and they wanted $75 to shorten it because it's entirely covered in beads.  Um, no thanks.  I don't love it that much.

So, is it possible to do myself?  What do I need?  Quite honestly, I don't care if it's perfect and I don't care if I (accidentally) ruin it the process.  I got my use out of it, so if I can make it short and wear it again, it's just a bonus.

Advice?

Re: Sewing help, please!

  • Could you cut it, (Straight of course) Lose some of the beading and then use some of that double sided hemming tape you can find in either sewing stores or walmart?

I don't know what its called, but I've used it when I hemmed a couple of pairs of pants myself.

You use an iron to make it stick.

I just threw up a little... Cause skinny girls make me sick hahahaha j/k!

Let us know what you do.  Or hey check Craigslist.  Maybe you can find a seamstress or make a posting under services needed/wanted.

  • They make hemming tape?! That's the best thing I've heard all day. I was planning on cutting it and trying to sew, but tape sounds so much easier.

I have another dress that I'm 'practicing' on.  Granted that one is just one layer and no beading... but, still.

The pick-up thing is cute with the dress in the instructions, but it's not really my style (or talent level!) :)

Off to Michaels I go for hemming tape...

    Thanks girls!

I don't think Michael's sells sewing supplies- try Joann's or Hobby Lobby.

Hahah. I figured this out a little late. Fortunately Joann's is just a few blocks from Michaels.

  • I did it!!!

I used the iron-on hemming tape for another dress and just regular hemming tape for this dress (heat would have been an issue with the beading).

If understand how un-homemaker-ish I am, you will get why this is such a huge accomplishment for me. lol.

  • Yay! Way to go and im glad it worked for you, just make sure to pack the tape incase you need a touch-up.
  • Ummm... for real? You fit into your prom dress? Not sure if I  am more jealous about it fitting or the fact that your prom dress is actually from this decade and not a complete embarrasment. LOL Seriously though. you look great!!!! No way would my circa 1994 prom dress ever stretch over this bod nor would I ever want it to. Ha!

    ahahaha Ger!

  • I'm right there with you Gerrie!  Back in 1997, I was all about velour.  I doubt I was any closer to fitting in to it when I was Andrea's age, thanks to all the drinking I did in grad school (my post baby body is remarkably similar to my heavy drinking body).

That hemming tape is the best stuff ever.  It's so cheap, too!

And good call Stellar - I threw that in my suitcase as soon as I read your post.
