International Cell Phone

Hey girls - my DH and I are going to Italy and Greece in September and I know I read someone on here had gotten an international cell phone to rent from Verizon. We currently have Verizon, but I really want an IPhone and our contract is up in July so we were going to switch to AT&T - does anyone know if you can rent an international phone with them?

Thanks!

Re: International Cell Phone

  • Not sure if you can rent an international phone with AT&T, but just wanted to say that I went to Germany last summer for work with about 40 of my co-workers (military) and AT&T was the only service that worked overseas (you have to make sure international calling is activated though). I was pretty much the only one who could get calls.
  • We used Verizon and it was really easy and pretty cheap to. I'm not sure about AT&T.

I don't know about Greece, but when we were in Ireland, it was an American phone and great to dial home, but we couldn't dial the "+" sign in front of the phone numbers and it wouldn't work to call Irish numbers.

We got lost trying to get back to our B&B and my FIL had to knock on some poor soul's door in some random small village at 10 at night to use their phone to call our host, who came to retrieve us in his PJs!

So long story, but ask about the "+" sign thing.

  • I have used my iphone while traveling abroad.  You just have to make sure it is in airplane mode so you are not using the data package (which I hear is really expensive when you are abroad since you pay per kilobyte or whatever).  You can go here to see their rates outside of the country.  It might be cheaper to call with a calling card but it was worth it for the ease of use.  I need to keep telling myself that because I just paid a cell phone bill with charges on it from outside the US...
  • I always rent my international cell phones from PicCell wireless and I've been really happy with them.

All their information is on the website.

  • We normally have Verizon which is (CDMA network which works in the US, Korea, and a few other places) We looked at renting one - it was easier to just buy a cheap GSM quadband phone and get a SIM card.

If you do get the Iphone on ATT it should work over there - just make sure you get the international plan part set up correctly before you leave so you don't have any surprise charges.  Really watch the data roaming part of it - it ends up as a stupid amount of $$$$.  You can turn off the data roaming and still use the wi-fi finder to find wi-fi and check your email that way.  We had friends that did this for our entire trip.  McDonalds seems to have it (you can get it outside the building) as well as some of the hotels in the cities, etc - just walk around until you find an open network.

If you don't get an Iphone before you go you can do what we did. We bought an unlocked quadband basic GSM (the same type of network that ATT/Tmobile run on) phone from overstock and just bought a prepaid SIM card for Italy - a set up fee (I think it was either $10 or 10 Euro

The rates to call home were $0.44 to call the US and calls within Italy were $0.22  - all incoming calls were free.   Which worked out well as Embarq (or whatever it is now) with the unlimited long distance package was $0.12 to call Italy.   The phone also worked in Greece, Turkey, Croatia, and Germany.  Though the rates to call out were a little higher in those countries.

You can also order a SIM card before you leave so you have the number to give out before you get there ---Cellular Abroad (look for coupons on line they normally at least have a $10 off one floating around) doesn't require your passport info like they do when you get them in country.
