We had a relatively uneventful visit, not near as stressful as it had been in the past.
There were a couple of issues - mom got drunk last night and we were sitting there talking about family names, like how my aunt, cousin, and cousin's kid all have the same middle name because it was my great-grandmother's name. My dad's middle name is Lee, he was explaining to the girls how my middle name is Lea, and how it was the same, just spelled different. I joked "I thought you named me after the condiment" and my mother said "We should have named you after the condom that broke." Ha..ha...ha?
The dogs. OMG. I closed off all the doors so the dogs could only be in the living room where we were or the kitchen. I told them to watch their dogs as last time the one peed in my office and I don't want dog pee in my house. Each one of the girls found a pee spot and cleaned it up. Then *I* found one and I said "Dad, your dogs are starting to piss me off - there's another pee spot. Maybe you should take them out for a walk?" To which my mother replies "You have no idea how often I have to clean up pee" I told her MY dog doesn't pee in the house, so I never have to, and I didn't want to clean up any more, so please take the dogs out for a walk.
She went downstairs to the girls' rec room, which is a disaster area. She said she understood why because the girls have gotten really bad about just dropping *** wherever they happen to be. But she wanted to go help them clean. I said no, they will clean it or I will take their DS's away. She said she would just "supervise" and when I went down to do laundry, both girls were sitting on their butts while my mother picked up their stuff. I told her to stop - they know the consequences of not cleaning and you're not helping by doing it for them. She said she never made me clean my room and that her therapist told her that kids need to be able to keep their space as they wish (which is BS - she made me clean my room all the time and would go through and dump out dresser drawers if the socks were messy).
So, MUCH better than last time, but not perfect. I think we both tried REALLY hard not to piss each other off.
Re: They went home!
Oh Wendi-I couldn't take the dog peeing bit! I'd have made her clean them up-or both your parents-esp if they weren't watching the dog... drive me batty!
As for the cleaning up-yep, the girls would have been responsible-IMO. ugh...
Glad it was uneventful and hope things are going better for your Grandma!
