My dogs chew on each other!

We have a new dog -- had him for about two months. They use each other for chew toys. It's the most bizarre thing! One will just sit there while the other one gnaws on his head. They both do it to each other and now they both have little bare spots where they've been gnawed on. Particularly, the pup...he has spots on top of his head and under his chin. So weird! They literally just sit there and take turns chewing on each others' heads.

  • That's so funny - what breed(s) of dog are they?

  • I glanced as I was clicking away - and I thought the title said something entirely different.

Hopefully they wil grow out of it.  My one dog likes to sit and lick the other's ears for what sounds like an eternity.  Other dogs let him.  It's weird.

  • my jacks do this to each other ... but not nearly as bad as your poor pup =(  it's not uncommon to see ellie gnawing on dora's ear or dora w/ ellie in her mouth ...

  • Our dog and my parents' dog do it too when they get together.  They're goldens.  They seem to go for each others' ears, trying to get the other to play (which usually works).  What's REALLY funny is when my brother gets on the floor and plays with them, they try to go for HIS ears too.  They must think he's just a really ear-deficient puppy.  They just do it in play (not hard), and have never been together for long enough to show wear from doing it.
  • See, I would actually be concerned since they are doing it enough that they now both have little bald spots. I would probably call a behaviorist to get it checked out. That does not sound OK to me.

  • Our dogs bite and pull on each others necks.  It's never enough to leave a mark, though.

Both are rescues, so they are mixed breed. One is a beagle/lab and the other is an airedale/pit/sharpei/shephard mix.

Yeah, I am actually getting a bit concerned... I may have to ask their vet for a recommendation.
