For those with dogs- how are they doing with the snow?

This was Murray's first significant snow fall and so far he's not loving it. We were all excited to take him out yesterday morning and we get out there and he's hopping on 3 legs, alternating which back leg he's using and then he jumped in a snow pile and curled up in a ball. It was sad and pathetic. Poor guy. Well MH took him out at noonish and he was fine, went to the park and ran around. The last 3 times he's been out the same thing has happened.

So I ordered him a coat and I don't know what to do about his feet. Not sure how he'll feel about boots. Anyone tried these?

We're in the city so we don't have much choice but to walk him.

Re: For those with dogs- how are they doing with the snow?

  • Not up there this winter, obviously, but we have PAWSafe. It's a wax I put on their paws to protect them against the salt, mostly. But be SURE you wipe it off before going inside because I didn't do that the first time and they had no traction on the hardwood floors and went flying.

Mostly I used the sweaters and tucked a cloth into my coat pocket to clear their paws out if snow or ice got stuck in them. Mine definitely let me know if her paws were cold or burning by holding it up.  The fosters would do the same! GL!

  • Arthur is not a fan. We take him out and he does his business as quickly as possible and bolts for the house. He doesn't wear a sweater or boots, but again, he doesn't like being out so he's not out for more than a few minutes at a time.
  • Simon looooooved the snow last winter... he hasn't really taken to it so far. He's doing his business right outside the door and running back inside. I think he needs a good run in it to kickstart the love again.

  • My dogs absolutely love the snow. Especially Billy (the one we suspect is part husky). They go absolutely nuts playing in it, it's so much fun to just watch them :-) Sorry yours doesn't!

  • Mine had foot issues last winter, we bought him some little nylon boots at petsmart and those helped. This year, he's in love with the snow and frolics all over the place when we're outside (without the boots). He did get some snow packed in his paws today and kept holding his foot up but as soon as I pulled it out, he was back to playing. Good luck, I'm sure with time, Murray will love the snow!

  • Luka  loves the snow!  He would stay outside in it all day if he could.  He just runs about playing catch, and eating snow.
  • I saw the wax online, I'm going to look into it.

He loved it at the park but he doesn't love the sidewalks, I'm wondering if the salt bothers him. I have some cute videos MH took at the park which is why we find this whole thing bothersome. He's only 9 months so hopefully he'll be used to it soon, I just want to make sure it's not hurting him.

  • Awww, Bruce love, love, loves the snow.  He's like a pig in mud.  When he sees it has snowed he bounces out the door.  He doesn't walk or run, he bounces, like Tigger.

The salt can burn their paws pretty badly!

  • That's what I've learned, I grew up in the burbs and there wasn't nearly as much salt there as there is here. It's almost overkill.

Anyway I had left our dog walker a voicemail giving him a heads up and he recommended "Mushers Secret" so I'm heading to BYOD in Southie to pick some up. It's $17 for a tub (think body works body butter) so I hope it offers him relief.

  • My dogs love the snow, but Loki forgets about it once its gone, so it takes him a good day to get used to it, to stop being scared of it, and want to play in it again
  • Winston absolutely LOVES playing in the snow. We have to practically carry him inside as he doesn't want to go back in. Chloe, on the other hand, HATES it. I actually felt really bad for her over the weekend. I knew we got a lot of snow but didn't realize it was over her head until we took her out. She totally freaked out. Sad
