Nanny Rates - advice please

We had a nanny in the past for our son, it was 1 kid and she also did housework so I'm not sure what I should be paying for our new situation.

almost 3yr son & 5 mos girl, I want 2 days week (16 hrs total) - childcare both, meal preparation kids only, educational activities for 3 yr old, while both are napping children's laundry only and do the dishes.

Any experience on what hourly rate should be? $13? I'm willing to pay cash and won't tax them.

Re: Nanny Rates - advice please

  • My experience from my days of being a nanny are that $10-15 an hour is a pretty standard rate, but with two kids and child-related housework, you're probably looking at the higher end of that.  You also may now want to admit in writing the no taxes part ;)
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • I never post on this board, but have been lurking lately and just wanted to offer feedback on this because I worked as a nanny in Austin for a while.

I worked 30 hours/week with one family and 8 hours/week with another. The 30/hour week family was a 5 month old and in addition to caring for her I did baby-related housework while she napped- i.e. washed her dishes, clothes, cleaned her room and play area, etc. I made $10/hour for her. The 8/hours week family was a 2 year old and I just fed him breakfast and took him to his toddler gym class at the gym a few blocks away (drove their car). I was also paid $10/hour for him.

For two children and the house work, you should consider the $15 range. I was fairly new (had a bit of experience working with the nursery at church for a few summers), but some nannies I met that had been at it for a few years were making upwards of $20something range for 1-2 kids.  It all depends i.e. do you really want them to stick around and pay more for a "career nanny" or do you not care if they come and go throughout the semesters and will pay less for a student type.

    HTH!

  • I'm a nanny currently and I think $13 would be fine if you were to hire someone who is a newer nanny.  If you want someone with experience I'd say you're looking at $15.

Also as far as the tax thing I personally wouldn't want a nanny who would be okay with basically breaking the law by not paying taxes to watch my children.  Flame away but I think nannies are role models for children and not paying taxes is illegal and not right in any way.

Will you be paying their share of Social Security and Medicare taxes?  Employment taxes are 15.3% of cash wages. Your employee is responsible for 7.65% or you can choose to pay that yourself (in addition to your portion.)
