Kauai Recommendations Needed

Hi!  We'll be staying in Kauai for 7 nights and need some recommendations on places to stay and things to do.

We'd like to stay in 2 separate areas in Kauai.  Thanks for your feedback!

Re: Kauai Recommendations Needed

  • We always stay on the East Side so we can easily drive to all points of the island with relative ease and in a fairly short amount of time.  We usually stay at the Plantation Hale (a Best Western property) which offers one bedroom condos (with full kitchens) that have a/c (a must for me).  You can also book them from other owners, like here or on VBRO.com

They are very affordable and centrally located in Kapaa.  There's Foodland and Safeway within a walking distance, not to mention the Coconut Plantation Marketplace for shopping and dining.  Preparing breakfast in and packing lunches for our day trips saves us a ton of money.   We usually eat dinner out, but the property does have gas grills and we have BBQ'd a few times too.  They have three pools and two hot tubs that are never crowded and we've always enjoyed our stays there.

We have also stayed at the Pono Kai, which is further North in Kapaa and it's nice too but we prefer the location of the Plantation Hale.

If you're set on staying in two locations, I might recommend half the week on the South Shore in Poipu/Lawai and the other half on the North Shore in Hanalei or PrincevillYou'll pay more for lodging/food in both of those areas of the island.e.  That said, if it were me, I'd stay in Kapaa and just drive to those locations, etc.  You can get to the Ke'e Beach on the North Shore (furtherest point you can drive to) in about 90 minutes or so and down to Poipu in about an hour.

  • I'm a resort kinda girl and looooooove the Marriott property.  I know there are a couple of them, the one we stayed at is close to the airport.  If I had to pick one thing to do in Kauai again it would be to hike the Napali Coast - amazing views.
  • hi susan!  here's a doc I created with a bunch of stuff I've emailed to friends over the years - link

    have fun!  i'm jealous Smile

  • We like to stay in the Lihue area, near the airport, because it's about halfway to either the Waimea or the Hanalei/Princeville sides.  We stayed at the Hilton in July and will be staying there again in January when we go back... the rates have been really affordable recently -- $109/night.  We like the hotel because it's really comfy, got a nice pool area and is located on a beach with amazing views of the morning sunrise.

If you're into outdoorsy things, I definitely recommend doing some hiking.  (We saw people doing trails even with their babies!)  Last time, we did the Canyon Trail to Waipoo Falls in Waimea Canyon, which was so beautiful, and the first part of the Kalalau hike to Hanakapiai Beach, which was also killer good.  This time, because I'm 6 mos. pregnant, we're doing a few shorter trails -- one in the canyon and some up North, and just hitting the beaches and lounging at the pool.

    Check out some possibilities here:

We've also gone speed rafting along the Na Pali and that was the best!  A friend of mine also highly recommends ziplining in the Princeville area.  We'll have to save that for next time, though!

  • Thanks for the recommendations ladies!  I'll check them out today as we book our accommodations.

Also I should've mentioned we'll be travelling with our almost 6 month old so we're thinking of baby-friendly activities to do.  It'll be a celebration of her half year bday, my husbands bday, and New Year's all rolled into one. :)

I was thinking as a gift hiring a photographer to shoot some family photos.  Does anyone have any recommendations???

  • hi melissa, we'll be staying in january too!  1/1 - 1/8. maybe we'll run into you guys there. my husband really wants to stay at the koa kea resort for 1-2 night and we'll stay at cheaper places throughout the rest of the trip.

With the baby I definitely recommend staying on the East Side...the grocery stores are close for items like diapers, snacks, etc. and more affordable than those on the North Shore.  Also, Lydgate Beach Park is right there which is very family friendly...they have bathrooms, showers, and a protected baby beach.  So does Poipu (South Shore).  There are many family-friendly restaurants in Lihue and Kapaa too...we took my 14 month old nephew and had no issues except in "fancier" resort restaurants.  And mostly that was the side eye from honeymooners and others not traveling with kids (he was a good baby too).

I always recommend Jennifer Prater of Island Echoes Photography...she shot our wedding and day after shoot and does family portraits too:

  • Wow, the Koa Kea looks like a really nice place!  Def a worthwhile splurge!  We'll be there from the 7th thru the 10th.... I'll keep my eyes open for you!
