Funny story - results in dead iphone

So my parents live on the bay at the Jersey Shore... save the MTV jokes :)

Anyways, we were in the back yard playing in the snow with the dogs and my goldendoodle ran down on the dock and jumped in the bay - which was like half frozen. And while he's a very good swimmer, it was cold and there was no way for him to get out. So DH and I run down the ramp to save our dog from drowning, and DH ends up falling in.... in full clothes and snow boots! Poor guy. So after saving DH and dog from drowning DH's iphone has been acting up.

The internet works, all the buttons work, but he can only hear people on speakerphone. We're gonna try to play the "i have no idea why my phone isn't working" card... but is it better to do that at the apple store? or the at&t store? Anyone have any experience with iphones?

Re: Funny story - results in dead iphone

  • I have no clue but am SO glad your dog is okay!!!!
  • My H used to work for Radioshack... so no experience with iphones in particular, but the best thing to do if you drop your phone in the water is to immediately turn it off and remove the battery.  Then place the phone somewhere warm to help dry everything out.  Think underneath a desk lamp, not an oven! (you don't want to melt it, just dry it out).  Leave it under the lamp overnight until all the electronics dry out.  I had this happen a few weeks ago (dropped it in toilet) did this, and everything works perfectly.
  • jlk - yeah, we did something similar. DH put the hair dryer on it for awhile, and then put it near the heater vent. There is no way to remove the battery though (as far as my limited knowledge goes). He's going to try to reformat it, because DH thinks it might be a software issue? No clue.

Cipolla - Thanks. His little fuzzy life flashed before my eyes.

  • Yeah, sorry I have no idea about the battery with iphones. I just know that every time a phone gets wet H is like "Take out the battery! Quick!"
  • DH has one of the 1st gen iPhones.  His suggestion is to take it to AT&T, since they won't be quite as adept at figuring out it got wet.  Apple may know more about what to look for, some phones have color coding inside to signal when they get wet.

For your sake, I'm hoping your DH has a newer version, since my DH can't get insurance (isn't an option at all), and is SOL now that his is acting up.

  • Is there visible water damage?  There are two points where you can check this.  There are little "pads" inside the usb connector at the bottom of the phone and there is one inside of where your earbuds plug in at the top.  If you shine a flashlight in there and can see white (on both areas) then they can't prove water damage.  If it's red, that means water got to it and neither AT&T nor Apple will consider it a warranty item.

Are you eligible for an upgrade?  If so, you can get a new iPhone for only $99.  If not, you can get a replacement iPhone for $199.  Of course if there is no visible water damage, you may be able to talk them into replacing it for free (if you still have your warranty)

I dropped mine in the pool on our honeymoon.  Scooped it right back up and everything worked fine except I had no wifi connectivity.  The way the guy at Apple explained it to me was that components would start rusting at the site where it got wet.  And, though wifi was my only issue at the moment, it was sure to continue in time as rust moved throughout my phone and damaged more things.

I sucked it up and payed the $199.

No one can get insurance on the iPhone.  It's not offered.  I was told by an Apple employee that people are putting it on their homeowners...which, to me, is STUPID.  Why would you want to file a claim on your homeowners insurance for a friggin phone?  One that you can replace for less than a deductible on HOI.

Thanks for the info. We'll do the flashlight test. I'm also worried because it was salt water... we'll see how it goes. Also, I agree with what you said about putting the phone on your homeowners. Our deductible is like $1k, I think...

  • You don't HAVE to use a flashlight.  I just say that because it makes it easier to see in there.  You should be able to see whether the color is white or red with your naked eye in reasonable lighting.
  • I would say take it to AT&T.  They would know a lot less about that specific phone than Apple people and probably wouldn't be able to tell it got wet.  Apple employees do constant training on all apple products and know exactly how to check stuff like that.

They'll know if the water indicators have turned red. It's not like they don't sell very many of them.  Most phones come with an indicator these days anyway.  They'll know.

So the things have turned red. Crap. But the phone is working for now so we're hoping DH can get another couple of months out of it until he has his renewal. Thanks for all your help!
